Did you know that there are over 70 million children in the USA? While every parent is proud of their little ray of light, knowing how to entertain children is a true skill.

This is especially true during the summer months when the weather is good and school is out. You may be wondering what summer fun activities you can plan for when they are at home for weeks on end.

You could take the easy route and allow electronics to entertain them. Often TV, YouTube, or mobile device applications are educational and fun for kids.

However, if you really want their summertime to have a positive impact on your children, planning outdoor activities are the way to go.

If you are looking for inspiration then look no farther. We are here to provide you with nine suggestions for summer fun activities. Read on to pick up some great ideas.

1. Make an Obstacle Course

If you grew up in a house with a backyard, you remember the fun you had building things. Whether it was a fort, a pool to splash about in, or an obstacle course, you probably have good memories of both building and playing.

Help your children to enjoy the same experience. It is not as difficult as you may think! Just think of what items you have lying around at home:

  • Hula-hoops
  • Jump ropes
  • Sticks and stones
  • Water hoses

Your kids get to engage their engineering and design prowess while they plan and build the course. After it is built they will get hours of exercise as they challenge themselves and their friends to complete the course in ever quicker times.

2. Camp in the Yard

Do you want to introduce your children to camping but do not have all the gear you need? Maybe some of your children are too young to camp far away from home? No problem. You can help your children to learn many needed camping skills right here at home.

Teach your children how to pitch a tent right there in your back yard. If it does not work or the tent is damaged, no problem! Simply head back into the comfort of your house.

Are half of your family enthusiastic about camping outside and the other half not? No problem, half can stay at home and the others outside. You can meet up for a hearty breakfast in the morning.

3. Go to the Beach

This option may not be possible for all families, however, if there is a beach within driving distance, then this is a great option for you. Your kids will love the feel of sand between their toes and jumping in the waves.

There may also be water sports facilities near the beach that your children can participate in. Snorkeling is highly recommended for children. Not only will they love the underwater experience, but they will learn many new things about underwater life.

Make sure that you have safe snorkeling gear for kids and head to the beach for a fun day out.

4. Feed the Birds

Speaking of education, you can help your children to appreciate nature even if you cant leave your backyard. How? By making a bird feeder.

To make simple bird feeders, take thin wooden sticks, and dip them in peanut butter. After this, you can roll them in birdseed. From your window, you can observe the feeding birds and teach them to identify different species.

5. Make Colorful Chalk Bombs

This is a messy, crazy, and totally fun idea. Make your own chalk bombs from materials that are completely washable.

The recipe is as follows:

  • one cup of water
  • two tablespoons of cornstarch
  • a few drops of food coloring

Put a small amount of the mixture into balloons and your chalk bombs are ready. As a tip, why not make targets on a wall for your children to aim for. If you don’t you may become the target yourself!

6. Learn to Cook

Summer holidays are a great activity for children. Not only do they learn skills that they will use for the rest of their lives, but they will appreciate the hard work that you put into cooking!

There are literally thousands of recipes on the internet that you can cook with your children. Why not see which ones grab your children’s attention and try them out.

7. Picnic at Home

If your child enjoys cooking with you, the next step is to plan a back yard picnic. Your child can learn how to plan the menu, invite guests, and pack the blankets and other items into the basket in preparation. They will learn cooking and project management skills in one go!

8. Paint Outside

Painting outside may seem like a messy way to have fun. However, when you provide the painting materials you can ensure that everything is washable. Simply choose your materials carefully and assign a local for your child to use as an easel.

9. Take a Local Tour

Did you know that you can visit your local fire station or police station? If you have a child that aspires to be a police or fireman this could be a great way to fire their imagination. Why not call ahead and make an appointment.
