Payton Pritchard Just Got a $44 Million Extension, and That’s Who the Celtics Are Now

Jaylen Brown is in Philly. Payton Pritchard just got $44.2 million.

That’s the Celtics offseason in two sentences. Boston locked up Pritchard on a two-year extension this week, a deal that runs through a 2029-30 mutual option. Brown’s trade to the 76ers for Paul George and a stack of picks came about three months earlier.

So read the tea leaves. Boston isn’t chasing the next top-five pick to replace Brown. Boston’s paying its sixth man like he’s part of the furniture.

Pritchard’s résumé backs it up, too. Pritchard won Sixth Man of the Year in 2024-25 off a bench role, averaging 14.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists across 80 games. From a bigger seat this season, he’s even better: 17.0 points, 3.9 rebounds and 5.2 assists through 79 games, with 50 starts. Same guy, new gear.

Joe Mazzulla isn’t shy about what Pritchard represents to this roster. “When people think of a Celtic, he’s one of the first people that comes to mind,” Mazzulla said.

Here’s how the news actually broke:

Jayson Tatum dropped money emojis on the Instagram post. Dejounte Murray said he’s “BEEN THAT DUDE.” Tatum and Murray’s reactions read like a celebration, not a eulogy for the old core.

Nobody’s calling Pritchard a franchise centerpiece, and he isn’t one. Pritchard’s a bench engine getting paid like Boston plans to run through him for years, not a star replacement. Boston looks like a different team than the one that traded Brown, and probably a smarter one.
