The Washington Capitals Won the Stanley Cup
After 44 seasons, the Capitals are finally the best team in hockey.
Game 5 last night was deadlocked until the third period. Eller scored late to give the Caps a 4-3 win to win the series 4-1. It was the Capitals’ fourth consecutive victory over the Golden Knights, whose incredible inaugural season finally ended in the desert in the Stanley Cup Final.
Vegas pulled the goalie in the final two minutes, but could not muster any pressure on Holtby. The Golden Knights may not have won the Stanley Cup, but their inaugural season gave their fans and the city memories to cherish.
After many years of crushing losses and disappointment, these Capitals won their fourth consecutive closeout game with a third period comeback.
Alex Ovechkin was the playoff MVP, and he also set a franchise record with 15 goals. Him and his teammates are bringing home Washington’s first Stanley Cup. This is also the city’s first championship in professional sports since the Redskins won the Super Bowl in 1992.
A sea of red-clad fans filled the streets of D.C. to celebrate their team’s victory back home. Meanwhile, thousands of Capitals fans were on hand in Vegas to witness franchise history.
