One could be quite understanding if Zdeno Chára opted to retire sometime soon. After all, the Bruins player is now 43 years old, making him the oldest active member of the NHL. In fact, one would think that he’d be ready to hang his skates up and take it easy for the remainder of his life. Yet, it appears as though he’s not ready to even consider retiring just yet.
Chára has had quite the impressive career as a blueliner for the Boston Bruins, gaining a massive 656 points (made up of 205 goals and 451 assists) through 22 NHL seasons. The majority of his career has been spent as part of the Bruins team, and he went on to become team captain in 2006. Chára also assisted with leading the team to three Stanley Cup Finals in 14 seasons, with one of those being a victorious outcome for them. Earlier this year, he joined a small group of elite players when he played his 1,000th game as part of the Boston team.
Prior to the stoppage of the 2019-20 season, it seemed as though the Bruins were poised for another run at the Stanley Cup, too. And while some are questioning if the league will resume, Chára is highly confident that it will. Regardless of which, the blueliner isn’t considering any sort of retirement from active competition yet.
Chára Looks Towards a Strong Future While in His Prime
While Chára didn’t want to get ahead of himself in anyway, he made comments recently that he’s “still in the present” and that he believes there will be some sort of hockey played this season. In the same interview with the After Hours team from Sportsnet, he said that he still loves going out onto the rink and playing the game. “…if everything is right, I still want to play”, he continued.
With such strong words from Chára and the Bruins remaining outrightly strong in their gameplay, it looks as though whatever the future holds, there’s plenty to look forward to from them. With Chára still operating as captain of the team, it’s only likely that the Bruins will continue to flourish under the Slovak. One other sector that is set to flourish from the return of the Bruins, and indeed the NHL overall, is the sports betting industry. Some of the other achievements that Chára has to his name include being the winner of the James Norris Memorial Trophy while playing for the Bruins during the 2008-09 season, being the tallest person to ever play in the NHL at 6 feet 9 inches and being the second European-born captain to win the Stanley Cup. Chára has also competed in the Winter Olympics for Slovakia in 2006, 2010 and 2014.
