David Pastrnak

Bruins David Pastrnak Out With Injury

The Boston Bruins this morning announced that right-winger David Pastrnak underwent successful surgery to repair an injury to his left thumb. Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney addressed the media about the injury. The incident occurred Sunday evening after a sponsorship dinner, when Pastrnak fell while walking to a car. He will be re-evaluated after two weeks of rest.

For the Bruins, the injury to Pasta comes at a time when every win and points are critical. Boston has had their share of multiple injuries this season and have recently enjoyed playing with a full healthy team.

As part of one the league’s most dynamic first-lines, the 22-year-old Czech has led the team in both goals and points. So far, he has scored 31 goals with 35 assists for 66 points in 56 games. He hit the 30-goal mark for the third straight season. He was on pace for 40 goals this season.

Boston currently ranks third in the Atlantic Division, with one point behind Toronto and one point ahead of Montreal. Coach Bruce Cassidy spoke about the injury and the opportunity for others on the team to step up their game.

“This team is used to playing tight games..that will probably be the formula moving forward.”

Pastrnak was not on the ice this morning; Matt Grzelcyk skated on his own. Here were this morning rushes as the Bruins prepare to take on the Chicago Blackhawks this evening at the TD Garden

Patrice Bergeron; Boston Bruins

A Milestone for Patrice Bergeron; Game Preview Bruins vs Islanders

Tonight marks a special milestone as The Boston Bruins face the New York Islanders tonight at the TD Garden. Regarded as one of the best two-way forwards in the league, the highly respected Patrice Bergeron will be playing his 1,000th game for the Black and Gold-the only team he has ever played for.

A Stellar Career

The 33-year-old four-time Selke Award winner  is one of five players to play over 1,000 games while wearing a Bruins uniform. He joins Ray Bourque, Johnny Bucyk, Wayne Cashman and Don Sweeney. When asked recently about career in Boston, the center modestly answered:

ā€œIā€™ve never really thought about my career. I guess the last few weeks Iā€™ve has to answer those questions and kind of think about itā€¦my best memories is always what Iā€™ve been able to accomplish as a team and also the friends that Iā€™ve madeā€¦Itā€™s been special. Obviously, I mentioned that too, playing 1,000 games for the same organization is something that Iā€™ve very proud of and I thinks itā€™s special. That adds to it for sure.ā€

As far as his future with the Bruins, Bergeron is taking one season at a time:

ā€œObviously, I have some years left on my contrast, but that being said, Iā€™m still taking it a year at a time and Iā€™m enjoying itā€¦For now, I donā€™t see myself playing as long as Zee I splaying right now, but it goes fast. You never know.ā€

Toughness: they name is Bergeron

This season, number 37 is showing no real signs of slowing down, especially as being part of the league’s most formidable first line. And when it comes to who among players is the toughest, Bergeron takes the cake. In Game 6 of the 2013 Stanley Cup Finals against Chicago, Bergeron displayed an unprecedented commitment and leadership for the team that landed him in the hospital for three days. If you didnā€™t know, Bergeron played the game with a train wreck of injuries, including a torn rib cartilage, broken rib, separated shoulder and a punctured lung. He won 45 percent of the face-offs, landed two hits and played 17 minutes, 45 second ice time. It doesnā€™t get tougher than that in any sport.

THEY SAID IT:

ā€œBest two-way player Iā€™ve ever coachedā€¦heā€™s also a great leader inside that dressing room and continues to be that. The Boston Bruins are fortunate to have him as one those guys because those guys are hard to find.ā€

former Bruins coach Claude Julien

ā€œPeople talk about dedication in hockey. Iā€™m not sure anyoneā€™s ever been more dedicated than him in that series, in that momentā€¦I wouldnā€™t have had the toughness to muscle through the pain he was probably going throughā€¦heā€™s a warrior.ā€

former teammate Shawn Thorton

David Pastrnak/All-Star

David Pastrnak An All Star

The boys in Black and Gold continue to enjoy some time off during their mandatory bye week, but thereā€™s one young Czech winger who is gearing up to get back on the ice this weekend at the NHL All-Star Games. 22-year-old David Pastrnak was voted to represent the spoked-B in San Jose this year. With this being his first appearance, Pastrnak is soaking in the sights and sounds. And judging from his big chipped-tooth smile, he’s looking pretty happy to be there.

BY THE NUMBERS

Pastrnak currently leads the team in goals (27) and points (56) through 49 games. Heā€™s tied for ninth place in the NHL for goals, and is tied for first in the league in power play goals. Itā€™s been a very good season so far with Pasta putting up some impressive numbers. This year he became the third fastest Bruin to score 100 NHL goals, as well as the third fastest Czech; right behind Jaromir Jagr and Petr Klima. He also scored 11 goals in the month of October, becoming the third Bruin to reach that milestone behind Phil Esposito and Charlie Simmer. He scored his 20th goal in 28 games, which is the fastest by a Boston Bruin since Cam Neely. (Neely scored 20 in 19 games in the 1993-94 season).

ā€œIā€™m having a good season, thanks to my linemates and teammates. Just gonna enjoy it and focus on the season..trying to stay humble, but at the same time itā€™s fun and my family is really happy and proud. ā€œ

David Pastrnak

Bruins All-Stars

Pasta is in good company of active Bruins players who have been elected to the All-Star Game. Patrice Bergeron has made two appearances, while Captain Zdeno Chara made six. Brad Marchand was elected twice in 2017 and 2018, while goaltender Tuukka Rask went in 2017.

This includes: fastest skater, premier passer, save streak, puck control, hardest shot and accuracy shooter. On Saturday the All-Star Game will start at 5:00 PM, with the Central playing against Pacific.  Game two will feature the Metro vs. Atlantic. Pastrnak joins a pretty star-heavy team that includes: Jack Eichel, Jeff Skinner, Nikita Kucherov, Steven Stamkos, Andre Vasilevskiy, Auston Matthews, John Tavares, Thomas Cabot, Keith Yandle and Jimmy Howard.

Boston Bruins vs New York Rangers

Game Preview: Bruins vs Rangers

The Boston Bruins will be facing the New York Rangers tonight at the TD Garden in their last game before the NHL All-Star break. After the game, Boston players will have the next eight days off (except for David Pastrnak).

After a 4-2 win over the St. Louis Blues this past Thursday night on home ice, the Bruins will be looking to get one more win and perhaps take over the second spot in the Atlantic Division. The B’s are on the heals of Toronto and with a win tonight, goaltender Tuukka Rask will be looking to make Bruins history as he would become the winningest goalie in franchise history.

HOT IN THE NET

Currently Rask is on a hot streak with a 6-0-1 record and has a seven-game point streak. After having a tough start to the season, Rask has slowly surged back to reclaim the number one goalie spot. While there will always be naysayers in regards to the goalie situation in Boston, the Bruins really have had two great goalies on their roster. Despite his recent slump, Jaroslav Halak has certainly provided much needed help in net as Rask worked to get his groove back.

For tonight’s game against the Blues, expect Rask to get the start in net. The Bruins are now 10-4-1 in their last 15 games played. In the first meeting between these two teams, fans will see the return of former Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid, who had been in Boston throughout his career up until last season when he was traded to New York. Tonight will mark his 486th NHL career game and first against the B’s.

Another little side note: David Quinn, a native of Rhode Island, coached Charlie McAvoy at Boston University for two years. Quinn was a Terrier for three years before becoming the assistant coach and eventually becoming head coach in 2013. This past Spring, he stepped down to become the new head coach for the Rangers and will be returning to his old stomping grounds at the TD Garden. For McAvoy, tonight’s game will a special one:

“Couple guys who I’m really excited to see. Both guys are great friends of mine. (Quinn) he really molded me pretty well, allowed me to grow up while I was at school there, taught me a lot of life lessons on the ice…I’m thankful for the things that he taught me.

Game Preview: Bruins vs Caps

As the Hockey Gods continue to smile down upon the boys in Black and Gold, tonightā€™s match-up against the Washington Capital in Boston will prove to be a mighty test. Ovechkin and crew have managed to defeat Bergeron and Co. 13 straight times. Could tonight mark the end of the Bruins drought against Washington? For the surging Boston team, who are coming off a five game winning streak, things are heading in the right direction.

ā€œThe easiest way to beat a team you havenā€™t is to defend really well, keep the puck out of your net…ā€

Coach Bruce Cassidy

Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy announced yesterday that goaltender Jaroslav Halak will get the start in net despite the recent hot play by Tuukka Rask. Halak had recently helped the Bruins break ANOTHER losing game streak against the Anaheim Ducks (nine to be specific). The Bruins won that game 3-1, and the thinking process is that once again Halak, who has certainly earned his stripes this season, will lead the charge against the Capitals.

To be honest, I donā€™t really know what I did, it just kind of went in. It was nice that one go in and obviously pretty shocked for sure.ā€

GETTING THERE

The season is now half-way through as the Bruins continue to play with positive momentum. After a temendous win at the Winter Classic, the B’s are looking and feeling good. Well, I feel good about it, to be honest with you. I mean, right now we’re halfway through the year (Game 41) and we’re at 50 points. We’d like to think we’ll get better, simply because a lot of the guys that were out that are key contributors are now healthy and the only one left is Charlie.”

Coach Bruce Cassidy
