Matchups to Watch for in Patriots versus Jaguars

The AFC Conference Championship rematch is today and we will take a look at some key matchups to watch for in the game as the vaunted Jaguars take on New England.

Jalen Ramsey Versus Rob Gronkowski

This matchup is probably the one everyone is looking forward to the most. More than likely it won’t even happen except for maybe one or two plays. Ramsey has been trash-talking everyone in the league and says he isn’t scared of anybody on the field. Maybe Gronk can help him gain some perspective. The more likely matchups would be Telvin Smith or Barry Church taking on the big man.

Ja’whaun Bentley Versus Corey Grant

Corey Grant had himself a productive day in the game in January. Especially with Fournette out, expect Jacksonville to use Grant on short passes out of the backfield as well as sweeps. However, the Patriots have deployed a stronger, faster troop of their own in Bentley, who has the ability to keep up with running backs. This will be a fun matchup to watch.

Patriots’ O-line Versus Jaguars’ D-line

The Jaguars’ defensive line has depth and stardom all around. They earned the “Sacksonville” last year after a phenomenal season. The Patriots’ offensive line held their own for the most part in the Conference Championship and need to continue to do the same in order to get the win.

Tom Brady Will Be A Patriot in 2020 And Beyond

Don’t expect to see Tom Brady in anything else other than a flying Elvis Helmet

Tom Brady has said numerous times, in various ways, that he plans to play until he’s 45. He’s 41 now and the reigning NFL MVP, so what would stop him from playing barring injury? Many have speculated his relationship with Bill Belichick isn’t the Greatest, but this season things are getting back to normal. Tom’s contract is up after 2019, Some seem to think he will play for a different team if he doesn’t retire. I do not believe this is the case, neither retirement or relocation.

After walking off the field last year under green and black confetti, Brady’s not done, not for a long time. As we know from Tom’s comments, he still feels like he has more to accomplish and more in the tank. Retiring after 2019 doesn’t add up with his attitude, not to mention his TB12 brand. Brady is different, he wants redemption after that Super Bowl loss. Tom also wants to do things nobody’s ever done before, winning more rings, and playing for the same team until he’s 45 goes perfectly with his attitude and his Brand.

Recently Patriot fans may have heard something they didn’t expect, or like about Tom Brady. NBC Sports Tom E. Curran went on WEEI’s “Dale & Keefe” radio show, saying if Brady doesn’t retire after 2019 he believes Brady will be in a different uniform. This is just Curran’s suspicion, so no need to panic.

Curran doubled down on NBC Sports Boston’s Early Edition, going as far as to include Gronkowski leaving with Brady. Now, Tom E Curran is and has been close to the organization for a long time. Let’s not forget he’s saying all of this, based on his observations and conversations. I respect his work, but unless it came from Tom E Brady himself, then I’m not buying it. Members of the media are fishing for clicks because of the lack of content, besides what’s happening on the field. Chalk it up to pure clickbait, the media just creates these stories.

My observation is a little different. Brady has now received his trainer back, Bill Belichick has seemed to have changed somewhat. The nickname “Chill Bill” has been used describing him this year. Also, the return of Josh McDaniels with a 5-year extension could mean Bill may be the one gone, not Brady. Basing what I’ve seen from Bill Belichick, and the newfound youthful spirit from Brady aligning with Josh McDaniels extension I see a completely different 5-year plan.

Five more years a Patriot, He’s not going anywhere

Tom Brady just a week ago told the world he wants to play 5 more years. His friend and offensive coordinator were stopped in his tracks from leaving for a head coaching job. Remaining with the Pats and a 5-year extension, I don’t think this is all a coincidence. Joe Montana left San Francisco at the end of his career, and Brady knows it’s not an uncommon situation. Seeing TB12 in another jersey would look very strange, fortunately, Patriot fans will never have to see it happen.

One thing about Brady is that he is a game changer, on and off the field. He’s shown that, with his training, diet, and performance. He doesn’t do anything unless it’s a calculated decision. Brady knows what he’s going to do already, he’s loyal to this organization to a fault. So when he didn’t get extended this summer, people started to believe the QB would be gone after 2019. As usual, Brady is the ultimate company man, took the deal knowing some things no one else is privy to.

I see a different 5-year plan from other media members. Sure the team may go year to year with Brady after next season. Or they could rework his contract again. Whether Bill is the coach or not, Tom Brady will be in the red white and blue for New England until he decides to hang up his cleats. Robert Kraft isn’t going anywhere, he’s already made his feelings clear through the Jimmy G saga, who his quarterback is going to be. Until Brady shows serious signs of decline, I believe he will be suiting up here every summer until 2023.

As for NFL Coaches It’s Belichick and Everybody Else

Belichick Is the Best Head Coach in the NFL

Bill Belichick is by far the best coach in the NFL, and it’s not even close. The reason for that is simple it’s because he drafted a quarterback in 2000 who has brought him five championships since. Most of Belichick’s assistants have gone onto becoming head coaches themselves. That question is why? My answer is because they either can’t draft a quarterback, or they try to act like Belichick when they haven’t won anything as a head coach.

There’s Nobody Close

The debacle on Monday Night Football between the Lions and the Jets was a disaster waiting to happen. Matt Patricia lost that game before it even started. All these reports coming out that he’s being too tough are prime examples of him trying to be like Belichick. Also, he has a quarterback in Matthew Stafford who isn’t a Tom Brady quarterback. Let’s go to Josh McDaniels, who is also failed as a head coach because he was trying to be like Belichick and drafted Tim Tebow, who isn’t even close to Tom Brady.

The advice to coaches around the league should be don’t be like Belichick because you don’t have a quarterback good as Brady is. Belichick has earned the right to be tough because he has the championships to back it up. Also a big huge thank you to the greatest quarterback of all time. Jon Gruden is now coaching the Raiders and because he doesn’t have a Tom Brady quarterback in Derek Carr, expect the Raiders to not be good this season. Now Jimmy Garoppolo might be a different story. No, he’s not Tom Brady, but he could be a decent quarterback and win championships. But overall it’s Belichick, Brady and the Patriots, and then everybody else until Brady and Belichick are out of New England.

David Andrews arrives

A day after a Patriots win, James white hosted ‘Sweet Feet For Strikes’ formerly known as The Mayo Bowl.

Jerod Mayo passed the torch to James White last year, last night being the 9th annual celebrity bowling tournament to benefit Boston Medical Center. As usual, this great fundraiser had a lot of support from Patriots players. Current and former players were walking the red carpet. Jerod Mayo, David Andrews, Eric Rowe, Sony Michel, Stephon Gilmore, Phillip Dorsett, Kyle Van Noy, Geneo Grissom, Scott Zolak, Matt Chatham were the football stars. Along with New England Revolution star, Scott Coldwell, and former Boston Bruins star Andrew Raycroft.

Once eveyone got in from the rain, James White wanted to get on stage to give a few words. “Boston Medical Center has a great motto, exceptional care without exception, and it’s just a great motto, because it really speaks to how the service is there.” White continued, “every time I visit you can just tell how they truly care about the patients, it’s like they treat them like family, and that’s what you want.” “Because these kids are in  dire need, and for us and a lot of my teammates that are back here, we try and do as much as we can to help those who are less fortunate than us, we do as much as we can.”

Sweet Feet for Strikes is a Fun charity for a wonderful cause. Which before last night has raised $2.3 million for Boston Medical Center.

James White aka “Sweet Feet” on the football field is also an avid bowler. His wife  Diana Civitello attested to James’s skills. Rookie Running Back Sony Michel introduced carrying his own shoes to the event.

Jeremy Hill tears ACL, out for Season

Jeremy Hill was going to tackle Tyrann Mathieu after he recovered a fumble from Rob Gronkowski when James Develin accidentally fell on his leg. He did not return the rest of the game. Yesterday, it was reported that he tore his ACL and is out for the season.

Jeremy Hill was signed over this summer and had beaten out Mike Gillislee for a roster spot. He looked to be the premier power back and the go-to-guy on offense in short-yardage situations.

What Now?

Most likely what will happen is that Ralph Webb will get promoted for extra depth. The Patriots could use Develin in short-yardage situations if it’s really necessary. Be on the lookout for any trades or free agent signings for some bigger backs as well.

The Pros and Cons of Brady’s Performance on Sunday

Brady’s Performance on Sunday

Tom Brady looked sharp over the win against the Houston Texans. At the beginning of the game, it was just him and Gronkowski connecting on the field. All the skipping of offseason workouts for Brady did it mean anything? Or does were the Texans a bad example of a team? Brady did his own thing during the offseason working out his way. He gets to do that he’s the greatest of all time and has earned that right. What we saw Sunday is something we’ve seen Brady do find his main target and try to connect with them.

One pro from the game was Brady to Gronkowski. They both connected really well, all Brady has to do is throw it up there and Gronkowski finds a way to haul it in. Without Gronkowski it’s a little more difficult I think to maybe get the ball to the other receivers. Phillip Dorsett had himself a game too, so did Patterson and James White. Even Devlin had himself a game. My one con from the game was Chris Hogan Brady couldn’t connect with Hogan at all. He missed Hogan twice down the field with the long ball.

Brady To Gronk Was Piece Of Cake

Brady admitted after the game there are things to improve on. For example, leaving some points on the field. Patterson was really only a factor on some screen plays and didn’t go over into the middle of the field like Gronkowski did. Another pro for Brady was his calmness in the pocket looking for the open receiver, tight end, and running back. Without Gronkowski, the drive before halftime would not have gotten us points. My last con would be connecting with Patterson downfield. I think maybe they should try that this week and use it next week in Jacksonville. Also, Brady can’t throw it to Hogan when he’s tripled covered. Gronkowski or Edelman can catch that, but Hogan is neither one of those players.  Overall, I give Brady’s performance a B+ considering all the drama and talk all offseason. Brady is 41 and passed for 277 yards and three touchdowns with only one interception on a tipped ball.

Patriots in general not impressed with the win today

Patriots Get The Win On Opening Day

It felt like a fall day in Foxborough today when the Patriots hosted the Houston Texans. Tom Brady connected with Rob Gronkowski a lot today. Gronkowski really had himself a day catching seven passes for 123 yards and one touchdown to put the Patriots on the board first. After the game, however, Brady said “We’ve got to do a lot better than that, I don’t think we played anywhere near what our capabilities are. All of us probably look at the game and realize we could have done a lot of things differently.” As a team, the Patriots committed three turnovers on Sunday, two on the offense and one on special teams. Brady threw for 277 yards on the day.

The team thinks they can play better

Brady continued saying “It’s a good win, obviously, but we’ve got to do a lot better, You’ve got to coach hard and you’ve got to correct guys, and you’ve got to correct yourself and have high expectations for yourself. And that’s how you have high expectations for the team.” In my opinion, Brady’s best drive of the day was just before halftime when Brady led the offense down the field and scored to make it 21-6 Patriots at halftime.

Bill Belichick also spoke after the game and thought it was a good win. “Obviously, some things we need to improve on, clean up on. But that’s the way it always is in a game like this. Houston’s tough. We expected it to go all 60 minutes, like it did, and come down to the final play. That’s pretty much what we’ve got.” Belichick said. Considering the loss of Edelman and Amendola, the offense didn’t do too bad. Phillip Dorsett played well catching seven passes for 66 yards and a touchdown. James White also had a solid game and scored a touchdown as well. Even Cordarrelle Patterson played well and gained 19 yards on a screen pass. Rex Burkhead who rushed for 64 yards and James Devlin caught four passes for 22 yards was a big part of the offense today too.

Next week, the Patriots travel to Jacksonville to play the Jaguars. Gronkowski will have a great game and make Jalen Ramsey eat his words. The Patriots do their talking on the field while Ramsey does his talking during media sessions. Next Sunday should be a great game.

Is Bill Belichick retiring sooner rather than later?

Bill Belichick’s Days Numbered Has Patriots Head Coach

Via USA Today

I wrote in April that Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was retiring after this season. This was after Josh McDaniels came back to be the offensive coordinator. In April, it was all about whether or not Rob Gronkowski or Tom Brady would be coming back for the 2018 season. After Gronkowski’s dirt bike press conference, there was a meeting with Belichick, Gronkowski, and his agent Drew Rosenhaus. Gronkowski would then post a video that he would be committed to the 2018 NFL season.

With Josh McDaniels coming back, I said the Belichick would be retiring at the end of the season. It was based on the events of last year and not being able to do things he wanted to do. For example, the trade of Jimmy Garoppolo for a 41-year-old quarterback. The only difference is Brady is playing at MVP level. The right decision in Kraft’s eyes and Belichick’s was to trade him.

What Does The Extension For Josh McDaniels Mean?

With this new five year extension for Josh McDaniels as reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport yesterday, you don’t pay an offensive coordinator like a head coach unless you see that coordinator becoming the next head coach in my opinion. It’s not known how many years Belichick wants to coach. When I went to training camp this summer for Boston Sports Extra, I was told that if Belichick wants to retire he’s doing a great job hiding it. Again, the Patriots do the best at handling distractions.

I still believe Belichick is done at the end of this season. When McDaniels came back, he said he needed to know what his situation was going to be going forward. Once he found out Belichick was going to be on his way out quietly, McDaniels said yes to coming back and coaching his favorite quarterback. Say McDaniels was coaching the Colts, what would Brady’s reaction be? Brady, of course, had a say in bringing Josh McDaniels back like it was reported.

Belichick has accomplished a lot along with Tom Brady. Brady has stated he wants to play five more years. However, Belichick has not stated he wants to coach five more years. Belichick did state in 2009 that he would be coaching into his 70s. That’s not too far off. Don’t be surprised if you just see the breaking news one day that Belichick is retiring as head coach of the Patriots. There will be no season long going away party. It will come at the end of the season when people least expect it.

Matchups To Watch For In Patriots Versus Texans

Alas, Patriots Nation rejoice! Football returns tomorrow as the great Tom Brady and the New England Patriots take on the up-and-coming Deshaun Watson and the Houston Texans who they beat last year in a close game. Here are several matchups to keep an eye out for as the game progresses.

DeAndre Hopkins versus Stephon Gilmore

This is essentially the matchup of the game. DeAndre Hopkins is easily one of the league’s best receivers with the athletic ability to make any throw catchable. He still had a 1300+ receiving season with the likes of Tom Savage and T.J. Yates at quarterback for most of the year.

Deshaun Watson was having a field day with the Patriots’ secondary last year. The key to stopping Watson is to shut down his most reliable target and make him force it to others. Think of it this way: whenever Hopkins is the primary read in a play (which is a lot) and he’s covered, it will take longer for the pass to occur and thus giving more time for pressure to come in or players to reposition themselves.

Enter Stephon Gilmore, who is easily the best cornerback on the roster. He needs to play very physical and aggressive to contain Nuk as he describes in the interview below. This is a very important test for Gilmore and the New England secondary down below. Do they have what it takes?

J.J. Watt versus Marcus Cannon

J.J. Watt is an elite player when healthy. Marcus Cannon is an elite player when healthy.  Both are coming off injuries. This will be exciting to see if Watt can power and finesse his way to sack Brady or can the developed Cannon hold his ground.

The rehiring of Dante Scarnecchia, the Patriots’ legendary offensive line coach, had done wonders with Cannon. In 2015, Cannon was beaten time and time again by Von Miller in the AFC Championship. When Scarnecchia returned, his coaching skills elevated Cannon’s game (along with the rest of the line). In 2016, he had only allowed 27 pressures and played in 99.3 percent of the snaps. Cannon looks to return to this form in 2018 but has a tough challenge in the former DPOY.

Rob Gronkowski versus Tyrann Mathieu/Aaron Colvin

The task of stopping Gronk plagues the minds of every team New England faces. Houston will most likely use the free agent signings of Mathieu and Colvin to cover him along with most likely a linebacker. Whatever linebacker who covers Gronk isn’t the concern at all.  Gronk can beat out most linebackers just with his route-running skills and athleticism.

Houston, if they want to slow down the New England offense, must try to do what the Chiefs did with Eric Berry last year. Only when Gronk lines up in the slot is when Colvin will cover him (as Evan Lazar had pointed out earlier yesterday).

This matchup with New England as a whole will be hard on the Texans secondary as a whole. Brady always finds a way to work with what he has, and that will always be dangerous.

Patriots announce their team captains

Patriots team captains announced

The Patriots have announced their team captains. Tom Brady has made the list along with David Andrews, Matthew Slater, James White, Patrick Chung, and Devin McCourty. One name that did not make the list was Rob Gronkowski and people are asking why not Gronkowski? Because of the things he pulled in the offseason. Now you can say Brady did that too but not to the extreme Gronk did. Gronk held a press conference talking about dirt bikes while OTA’s were going on. Brady was training and enjoying time with his family. Also, Brady has earned the right to be all about himself after the career he’s had, he’s the first person on the field he’s a captain because of the career and success he’s had on and off the field.

Brady has been a captain since 2002

James White is also deserving of being a captain. He’s a big part of that offense and I’m sure will have an impact especially with Edelman out the first month. Devin McCourty has always been a leader on and off the field. Matthew Slater seems like he’s always a team player and get the players fired up. He doesn’t get much playing time but his presence in the locker room is somewhat what drives the team.

Patrick Chung is well deserving of team captain as well. He brings talent to the defensive side of the ball which is somewhat weak but having him back there helps. David Andrews has always been Tom Brady’s go to as a center. Andrews was also a team captain last season. Dont’a Hightower, and Duron Harmon are no longer team captains for this season as well as Gronkowski. The speculation on whether or not Belichick wanted Brady as a captain is a waste of time to talk about. If Brady wasn’t a captain people would be calling out Belichick, now Brady is a captain people think Brady and Gronkowski should be captain together. Really a no-win situation, In my opinion, the captains are fine the way it is and Brady deserves it.
