Mookie Betts incredible 2018 campaign was capped off in style last Thursday when the Boston Red Sox star outfielder was named  American League MVP.

Betts’ feats over the past year were honoured by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, who named him baseball’s Most Valuable Player after the 25-year-old received 28 of a possible 30 first-place votes.

Mookie (born Markus Lynn) became the 11th Red Sox player to win the award, joining an illustrious list that includes Dustin Pedroia (2008), Mo Vaughn (1995), Roger Clemens (1986), Jim Rice (1978), Fred Lynn (1975), Carl Yastrzemski (1967), Jackie Jensen (1958), Ted Williams (1946 and 1949), Jimmie Foxx (1938) and Tris Speaker (1912).

In winning the MVP award, Betts also made history as the first American League player to ever win the World Series, the Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, the batting title and Most Valuable Player in a single season. Betts became only the second man in Major League Baseball history to record the feat also, with the only National League player ever to collect all those awards in the same season being Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt, with his achievements in 1980 for the Phillies.

All of this in the same year that Betts’ wife Brianna gave birth to their first child; a baby daughter born in early November.

During this season, Betts hit .346 with 32 home runs, 80 RBIs, 129 runs scored and 30 stolen bases while slugging .640 and generating a 1.078 OPS. The fact that he led the Red Sox to the 2018 World Series title in an MVP winning season in the process may not only make him the best player in the league this season, but one of the best of all time to grace Fenway Park.

Brady Addresses Deion Lewis’ Anti-Patriots Comments

Could Rob Gronkowski Retire if He Does Not Receive a New Deal?

Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has been dealing with ankle and back injuries this season, and that could impact his future in a big way.

Gronk has caught only 29 balls for 448 yards so far this season, which may affect how the team approaches him going forward. They gave him an incentive-filled deal that hasn’t worked out well for him at all so far this season, and it will be more of the same next year.

As such, Gronk may not deem playing worthwhile, which makes retirement a possibility. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk shared his take.

“I think that will be a factor in his ultimate decision and the fact he had a chance to play somewhere else and didn’t want to, I think there’s a good chance he just walks away after this year unless the Patriots are willing to rip up the last year of that contract and give him some form of security that is not tied to being healthy and producing on the field,” Florio said on NFL Sunday, which WEEI transcribed.

This isn’t a huge surprise, as for awhile, it seemed like Gronk wasn’t even going to come back this season, so this issue isn’t going away in the future, especially as his injuries mount up.

Could the Jets Ring a Bell?

Le’Veon Bell failed to sign his franchise tender, so he won’t be playing for the Steelers this season. It’s safe to say he’ll never be wearing a Steelers uniform again.

In fact, he won’t be playing for any NFL team this year, as he rests up in anticipation for hitting the free-agent market in the spring. The Steelers are unlikely to hit him with the transition tag, as that doesn’t accomplish much, and they’re not going to franchise tag him a third time, paying him upwards of $25 million (average of top five NFL players’ salaries).

At this point, all talk involving Bell will be about his future, specifically his potential landing spots. He was previously drawing interest from the Jets, Browns, Dolphins and 49ers, and those teams still appear to be the favorites to approach Bell with a lucrative offer, at least at this time.

And apparently, the Jets are at the top of the list. Bleacher Report insider Mike Freeman reported on Friday that it’s a “foregone conclusion” Bell will land with the Jets.

According to a number of NFL scouts and front office executives, there’s only one team that makes sense for the Steelers star: the New York Jets.

“I think it’s a foregone conclusion,” said one Steelers source.

“That’s the place where most of us have him pegged to go,” said one NFC scout.

The Jets do appear to be the most likely landing spot right now. The Jets have the cap space, and they’re in need of a veteran running back to anchor the backfield. They have a lot of youth on the offensive side of the ball, and Sam Darnold will be entering his second year as quarterback in 2019, so adding a proven veteran such as Bell makes sense. He also likes the night life, so New York could be viewed as an attractive destination for Bell.

Most importantly, though, the Jets can afford him, and would likely offer a good deal of guaranteed money to the soon-to-be-27-year-old running back, and that’s what matters.

Ironically, California was the first state to issue anti-gambling laws. The initial laws were weak and had to do with the prohibition of specific games. Nevertheless, the public attitude towards betting remained unchanged.

Slowly, the state strengthened its anti-gambling measures and by the 1860, all forms of gambling which included a bettor and a bookmaker/house were banned. As this law did not make betting itself illegal, people kept on betting; this time in a parimutuel form, though.

In 1891 at last, all gambling-related activities were banned across the USA.

  • A new era begins

In the early 20th century, wagering activities remained illegal in the US and it was only in 1949 that Nevada finally legalized sports betting. Even though wagering on sports was finally possible, good faith was missing. Moreover, sports-related scandals that happened in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s did little to improve the reputation of the enterprise. On the contrary, sports wagering was again deemed as a decaying activity.

What came as a natural result of the sports-related scandals of the time was the Federal Wire Act of 1961, which not only made the activity of betting on sports illegal, but also prohibited the sharing of information concerning the enterprise, too.

And yet, gambling thrived in spite of the attempt to ban it again – it was way too popular. According to a report of the 1970s, about two-thirds of US citizens gambled and 80% of the population approved the enterprise. Still, legislation was not changed, and gambling remained a prohibited activity, loved by many.

  • 1992 and PASPA

Slowly and steadily, the government changed its views on casino gambling, but the attitude towards sports betting remained largely unchanged. In fact, professional sports leagues also held a negative view on sports betting, arguing that the activity would compromise the integrity of different games.

And that is how PASPA, which was signed in 1992, came into existence. Simply said, PASPA enacted a total ban on all sports betting and other gambling activities in all US states. The government gave individual states one year to decide whether they wanted to allow sports betting within their borders, and Nevada was the first state to demand a comprehensive list of betting options. Several other states also included some forms of gambling, but their demands were not as extensive.

  • Present-day and future

In May 2018, Supreme Court abolished PASPA and gave states the right to decide whether they wanted sports betting within their borders or not. Following the overruling of PASPA, New Jersey became the first US state to open online sportsbooks and land-based betting shops within its borders. Second to follow was Mississippi, which launched sports betting back in August 1. Additionally, West Virginia is expected to launch sports betting on September 1, 2018.
