Analyzing Each College Football Contender’s Chances for National Title Shot

Whether justified or not, at the start of every college football season each fan base has hope. Hope that a committee of thirteen people who eat, sleep, and breathe college football all believe that your team is worthy. I will admit it, I have bias, and have been lucky enough to experience that hope come to fruition on multiple occasions since the start of the College Football Playoff. I am an Ohio State Buckeyes fan living in Columbus who will be attending the university next year. In 2014, when the Buckeyes made that late season run after Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett went down, Ohio State’s destiny was in the hands of the committee. When Ohio State was announced as the fourth and final team to make the playoffs, it was the best feeling ever.

College football is about to have the biggest and most meaningful championship weekend in the long history of the sport. Top-ten match-ups galore, all with an unprecedented impact on the playoffs. Whether your school is still in the hunt, you should be watching. The caliber of football will be amazing, and the stakes higher than ever. However, if your school is still in the hunt, you are probably asking two questions: “Do we deserve it?” and “What needs to happen for us to get in?”

Allow me to give you a guide as to what you should want to happen as I analyze each contender’s current resume as it stands as well as the best case scenario that COULD get your team a playoff berth.

(10-2) TCU Horned Frogs vs (11-1) Oklahoma Sooners – Arlington, Texas, Fox, 12:30pm

Oklahoma’s Resume:

Oklahoma has probably been the most polarizing team in college football this season. This title makes sense considering that they have one of the most polarizing player in college football: Baker Mayfield. Mayfield has torn up college football this season. His personality may certainly be questioned, but his talent should not. The resume should be all about what the team has done, but when you have a figure like Mayfield, he stands alone as a reason to consider Oklahoma for the playoffs. Do not get it twisted.   If they defeat TCU, Oklahoma deserves a spot. This game is far from in the bag however.  Even with the quality win in Columbus versus the Buckeyes, the Oklahoma defense has had a knack for giving up points, which could certainly make this rematch interesting. Oklahoma had one bad loss, and it was to an unranked Iowa State team. Other than that, with a win this Saturday vs TCU, the resume sparkles.

HOW THEY GET IN:

Plain and simple, win and they are in. Let’s be honest, love him or hate him; you want to see Baker Mayfield on the big stage again. While the game itself is far from ‘plain and simple’, if Oklahoma prevails, which is a big “if”, consider them a lock for the playoffs.

(11-1) Georgia Bulldogs vs (10-2) Auburn Tigers – Atlanta, Georgia, CBS, 4:00pm

Georgia’s Resume:

In review, Georgia’s season has been a long-awaited return to the top of the college football ranks. Former Alabama defensive coordinator, Kirby Smart, in his second season heading the program at Georgia has officially turned things around. Georgia has the fourth-ranked total defense in college football, and has only one blemish on its resume: a blowout loss to a school none other than the one they are about to face, Auburn. Georgia’s resume is highlighted by one quality win against #24 Notre Dame. The biggest test came against Auburn, when Georgia forgot to show up, getting blown out 40-17. Georgia has the chance of a lifetime.  Make the committee forget about that loss by defeating Auburn this Saturday.

HOW THEY GET IN:

First things first, if Georgia doesn’t defeat Auburn they will be eliminated from contention. However, if they do beat Auburn, they will have a great case and an amazing chance at the playoffs. They will have a quality win against #24 Notre Dame, and a quality win vs top-ranked Auburn. With that comes the SEC Championship. With a win over Auburn, and assuming Oklahoma defeats TCU, they should be safe.

Auburn’s Resume:

Auburn may very well be the hottest team in college football right now. Led by Jarrett Stidham and Kerryon Johnson, Auburn has defeated both Georgia and Alabama while ranked #1 in recent weeks. One geek may say, “BUT THE COMMITTEE HASN’T EVER PUT A TWO-LOSS TEAM IN THE PLAYOFFS”, but do not listen to them. This season there are more teams with one and two losses than before. Auburn only has one bad loss, anyway, with the other probably the best loss a team can have: 14-6 vs Clemson in the second game of the season. The other loss coming to LSU certainly does not look great, but they defeated two #1 teams. ‘NUFF SAID.

HOW THEY GET IN:

If Auburn defeats Georgia again, they are in the playoffs.

However, Auburn fans, I would not lose all hope if Auburn plays well and loses to Georgia. They have destroyed them already, and defeated Alabama. Should Oklahoma lose, Ohio State win, and Auburn lose, I would not be surprised by the idea of Auburn sneaking in with the ACC winner, Georgia, and Ohio State/Alabama.

Crazy to imagine a three-loss team making the playoffs, but it could happen!

(11-1) Miami Hurricanes vs (11-1) Clemson Tigers – Charlotte, North Carolina, ABC, 8:00pm

Miami’s Resume:

Like Georgia, this season has been a long-awaited return to the top for Miami. The recent addition of head coach, Mark Richt, along with good recruiting, has brought back the Miami we all remember from the early 2000’s and before. Standing at a record of (11-1), Miami’s quality wins have come against #13 Virginia Tech, and the breakout game vs #3 Notre Dame. The Turnover Chain swept across the country after the upset victory vs Notre Dame. Their time in the sun didn’t last too long, though.  A few weeks later they were upset by Pitt 24-14.

HOW THEY GET IN:

With a victory over Clemson, a team who many assume is the best team in the country, should all but guarantee a playoff spot for Miami. Defeating Clemson is probably the toughest task that any team has ahead of them this weekend. Dabo Swinney has a very good thing going on both sides of the ball for Clemson right now.   The Turnover Chain will need to be in full effect against Kelly Bryant and that Tiger offense for Miami to pull through and clinch a playoff berth. Win and you are in.

Clemson’s Resume:

Clemson’s resume is filled with quality win after quality win. They defeated Auburn 14-6, at #14 Louisville, and at #12 Virginia Tech. Clemson has certainly proven themselves even with their ugly upset loss to Syracuse. They have one of the best head coaches in football, being the defending National Champion could help, and they seem unstoppable.

HOW THEY GET IN:

There are a few ways that Clemson could get into the playoffs. The first, and most direct way: Defeat Miami. If Clemson defeats Miami on Saturday night, then they will likely head into the playoffs as the #1 seed. The second, if they lose to Miami, but Oklahoma loses to TCU, while Wisconsin defeats Ohio State, and Auburn defeats Georgia, the committee could put them in over Alabama as the fourth and final team. The third, Clemson loses to Miami, Oklahoma defeats TCU, Ohio State defeats Wisconsin, and Auburn defeats Georgia. The committee would have to choose between Clemson, Ohio State, and Alabama.

(12-0) Wisconsin Badgers vs (10-2) Ohio State Buckeyes – Indianapolis, Indiana, Fox, 8:00pm

Wisconsin’s Resume:

Wisconsin’s biggest win this season was against #24 Michigan, a game that many didn’t believe that Wisconsin would win. Wisconsin is the only unbeaten Power-Five team left, and have the #1-ranked total defense. They have a clearly stout defense, withthe offense led by a stud freshman RB, Jonathan Taylor. Wisconsin has so many doubters because they haven’t had any “true” quality wins this season. Michigan isn’t truly a quality win. This resume is questioned, rightfully so, but that could all change Saturday night.

HOW THEY GET IN:

Wisconsin defeating Ohio State should, and probably will, get them in. as undefeated Big Ten champions.  Unless the win is the ugliest win of all time, I do not see any way that the committee decides to put Alabama in over Wisconsin (assuming Oklahoma wins). With an ugly and unbearably boring win, it wouldn’t surprise me if the committee imagined an Alabama and Nick Saban vs Wisconsin game… who do you think would win? I would take Alabama right now, but this all depends on how Wisconsin plays/wins.  Wisconsin just has to play well and win the game to avoid any discussion.

If Wisconsin does decide to win the ugliest type of 14-10 game, the “Alabama or Wisconsin” question would fade away.  If Oklahoma loses and Clemson wins, they would both be in anyways.

Ohio State’s Resume:

Four weeks ago, Ohio State was all but eliminated from the playoffs. After a quality 48-3 win vs #12 Michigan State, then running the table, Ohio State’s hopes are alive. They have the quality win vs Michigan State, and they also have the win over #2 Penn State. They have two losses, one not  completely awful, vs Oklahoma. The other is probably the worst loss a team can have, at Iowa 55-24.

HOW THEY GET IN:

Ohio State has no guaranteed path to the playoffs. With that said, they will be eliminated if they do not defeat Wisconsin on Saturday. The best thing that Ohio State can do for themselves is to absolutely route Wisconsin. Leave the best impression that they can. The easiest way for them to make the playoffs is to put on an amazing performance in a win vs Wisconsin, and for Oklahoma to lose. That would give the committee another reason for Ohio State to get in. The likely scenario has Oklahoma winning, though. Knowing that, it will come down to Ohio State as Big Ten Champions vs Alabama. Urban Meyer vs Nick Saban.

Alabama’s Resume:

Alabama by far has the slimmest odds of making the playoffs out of the listed teams. They do not have a true quality win, like Wisconsin, but they aren’t undefeated like Wisconsin.  Alabama lost its only quality- level game against Auburn this week, two weeks after being on upset alert by Mississippi State. The game resume isn’t great, but again… this is ALABAMA we are talking about. They have Nick Saban, they have multiple first round picks, and they have been to the title game back-to-back years. The benefit of the doubt may apply to them.

HOW THEY GET IN:

Like I mentioned above, Alabama will be biting fingernails all weekend long. Alabama should out-cheer the biggest TCU fans this weekend. If Oklahoma loses to TCU, it practically opens up a spot for Alabama. The only scenario with Oklahoma losing that doesn’t look good for Alabama is if Miami defeats Clemson, and Wisconsin defeats Ohio State. That would put in the SEC winner, Miami, Wisconsin, and either Clemson or Alabama in. That is a tough match-up. Even if Oklahoma wins, Alabama can still make it, they just then become Ohio State fans. That would set up Ohio State vs Alabama for the fourth spot.

Every college football fan in the world should look forward to Saturday. It could be one of the best days in college football history.

How the Red Sox Could Build an Offensive Machine

Two straight seasons with the Red Sox finishing first in the A.L. East, and two straight seasons barely making a dent in the ALDS.

Should the Red Sox keep waiting for consistency from their young players Bradley, Betts and Bogaerts? Should they hope one day they all click at once in the playoffs? Then, could the Red Sox finally make the run their payroll demands?

Or is it time to stop waiting? Should the Red Sox finally do away with the old, and bring in the new? 

The very thought has half of Sox Nation calling for my head, as the official unofficial Armchair General Manager of the Red Sox. This is not a democracy people! I appointed myself, and only I will dethrone myself! Before you go “Louis XVI” on me, allow me to entice you with an improved offense, because perhaps it’s time.

FIRST MOVE:

Let me start by saying I am not of the belief that JD Martinez will be leaving the National League. Had he been available in a hypothetical world, perhaps I make a different move, given the history of our President of Baseball Operations, and the flexibility that comes with being an organization like the Red Sox.

Giancarlo Stanton

 

First, allow me to dive into the haul that I have chosen for Giancarlo Stanton…

We know what Jackie Bradley, Jr. provides, so no need to discuss him. Michael Chavis, Alex Scherff and Tanner Houck, are three of the top five prospects in the Red Sox system. Yes, this is a lot, but allow me to break it down:

Michael Chavis has been playing the best baseball of his life in the Sox system, but is being blocked by Devers, he is an easy move.

I consider Alex Scherff to be a rather easy move as well, considering the Sox aren’t giving up their top prospect here, Jason Groome.

Tanner Houck could be special. He is the one that hurts here, hurts bad. He has ridiculous upside, but remember former Red Sox #1 pitching prospect Anderson Espinoza? The Sox gave him up for Pomeranz, and everyone was irate? He was pitching poorly for San Diego, and went on to have Tommy John surgery. I know, hindsight 20/20, but allow history to put it into perspective: Prospects are prospects, and Stanton will be crushing fifty bombs a season over the Monster for the next ten years (no bias here, I swear!!!).

Overall, it is a pretty hefty trade, the top five of the Red Sox farm is going to need some new faces for sure. They were able to keep their #1 prospect Jason Groome, (ace potential) and Sam Travis.

SECOND MOVE:

This next move seems almost too good to be true. Keep in mind, The Red Sox may need a Designated Hitter after next season, with Hanley most likely gone. Even with Stanton, and Pedroia, missing a substantial amount of time, there is a lack of power.

Xander Bogaerts SS

Brian Dozier 2B + Jorge Polanco SS/INF

 

Many will view this as the Red Sox giving up a young, and unbelievably talented SS, who was raised in their system. What do your eyes tell you? After watching the World Series, does slapping singles to right field look valuable on the big stage? 

What I will call it, is the Red Sox trading a young SS who has hit his ceiling. I hate to say it, but the power isn’t coming.  Stop having false hope. He has yet to show up in the playoffs. In return, a power hitter in a contract year (good thing), could play 2B while Pedroia is out, then play Designated Hitter, or potentially First Base, if the Red Sox work at it. Given Dozier’s small ($6M) cap hit this season, the way is paved for the Red Sox to pay him well, once Hanley is off of the books after next season, when Dozier is up for a renewal.

Jorge Polanco showed his undeniable upside, as he tore up the majors towards the end of the season. His hot ending was needed after he struggled during the beginning and middle. At the very least, he could play 2B while Pedroia is out, or be a depth player while he hones his craft.

THIRD MOVE:

The Red Sox could go with Jorge Polanco as their full-time SS, but I see them wanting to develop more first. With that being said…

Re-sign Eduardo Núñez SS/3B/2B/OF

 

The Red Sox have their starting SS, for probably the next three seasons. Núñez was obviously a hit with fans, due to his amazing production. Putting Núñez’s speed atop the lineup with Betts, Stanton, and Dozier, is mouth-watering.

CONCLUSION:

This new-look offense certainly has some sparkle to it.  Adding Stanton and Dozier provides stability in the power department, while at the same time shores up the DH position, after Ramirez is gone. Dozier could also play 2B, while Pedroia is out. Núñez at full-time SS, for likely three years, gives the Sox time to either draft, or prepare, Jorge Polanco for the gig. This offense remains young, but gains powerful veterans to help put them over the top.

Dion Lewis’ Search for Good Health and an Opportunity

College Stardom

 

Dion Lewis’ freshman season of 2009 at Pitt put him on the map. A 5’8″-195-lb running back ran all over the Big East. He broke multiple Big East and Pitt rushing records previously held by both Tony Dorsett and LeSean McCoy. Big East MVP, Big East Offensive Player of the Year, Second Team AP All-American, Doak Walker semifinalist and Maxwell Award semifinalist. Dion Lewis’ talent has never been questioned.

To put Lewis’ freshman season into perspective,  compare his statistics to those of Kareem Hunt’s best college season.

Dion Lewis:

2009 Pitt (FR) – 1988 total yards / 5.7 yards per touch / 18 total touchdowns 

Kareem Hunt:

2016 Toledo (SR) – 1878 total yards / 6.2 yards per touch / 11 total touchdowns 

Dion Lewis’ talent was undeniable. To put up better numbers as a freshman than NFL star Kareem Hunt did as a senior, presents pure evidence that from the beginning the talent has been there.

Drafted and Blocked

Due to concerns about Lewis’ lack of ‘NFL Size’, he fell to the fifth round where he was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles.

In Philadelphia, Dion Lewis was never given the opportunity to get on the field. He was being blocked, rightfully so, by LeSean McCoy: One of the best running backs in the NFL. Dion Lewis was still in search of the team where he could show the skills that helped him shatter numerous records back at Pitt.

Traded to Cleveland

In April of 2013, the Eagles traded Lewis to the Browns. At the time of the trade, Cleveland possessed a budding star at the running back position: Trent Richardson. Cleveland used a first round pick on Richardson, and in the 2012 season, they worked their 22-year-old running back to death. Many saw the addition of Lewis as a way to lighten Richardson’s load in the passing game. In 2012, Richardson caught more than 50 balls and was targeted 71 times. If Lewis was indeed going to help in the passing game, he certainly had a large opportunity to do so.

Any potential plan for Dion Lewis in the Cleveland offense never got to play itself out. In the preseason of 2013, Dion Lewis broke his fibula and suffered ligament damage.

There was potential for Dion to make a name in Cleveland. All hope came crashing down with the break of his fibula. The next season, Trent Richardson was traded away from Cleveland, leaving a larger-than-life hole that could have easily fit a 5’8″ 195 lb frame in it. The seriousness of Dion’s fibula break, however, ensured that he would never play a down of his contract for the Cleveland Browns. An enormous opportunity for Dion Lewis to showcase himself, stolen by injury.

New Team… No Opportunity

In September of 2014, the Indianapolis Colts took more than a flyer on the still-young running back.  They signed him to a two-year contract. Dion’s time with the Colts lasted no longer than a week. The Colts decided to add defensive depth. When doing so, Dion was the counter-cut.

Future Contract

During the 2014 season, three months after being cut by the Colts, Bill Belichick came calling. Dion Lewis signed with the New England Patriots on a future deal for the 2015 season. Dion Lewis sat out the entire 2014 season, waiting for his opportunity in the 2015 camp.

Looking back, it seems Bill Belichick had a plan all along. Two running backs on the Patriots in 2014 were set to become free-agents after the season. The Patriots saw signing Dion Lewis to a future contract as an opportunity to add depth before they inevitably lost both of those backs, Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen to free-agency.

2015 New England Patriots Camp

A battle brewed in camp. Matter of fact, it was the talk of the camp.   Who would play the passing back role for the New England Patriots? Long-time Patriot, Brandon Bolden? James White, who the Patriots spent a draft pick on? Other signee, Travaris Cadet? Journeyman Dion Lewis?

By the end of the preseason, it was clear to everyone that covered that team.   Dion Lewis had won the ‘scat back’ role in New England. In case you aren’t familiar with how things work in New England, Bill Belichick isn’t one to announce who wins battles. Nothing was different in this instance.  It was noticeable how much better and more prepared Dion Lewis was than the others in line. Come opening night, it proved true.  Dion Lewis won the job.

The Opportunity

Dion Lewis started as the primary running back on opening night vs the Steelers. He has LeGarrette Blount’s mishaps to thank for that. Blount was supposed to start Week 1 as the lead back.  Sadly for him, he was suspended one game for an incident that happened the year before. Dion Lewis winning the ‘scat back’ role, and Blount’s suspension combined for the only true opportunity Dion had in the NFL up to this point.

Dion Lewis burst onto the map on September 10th, 2015 vs the Steelers. He finished with 19 total touches for 120 yards from scrimmage. Dion Lewis finally got the opportunity to show what made him a human video-game at Pitt, and boy did he ever. The lateral quickness was still there, and he could make cuts just the same as before snapping his fibula. “Lewis” jerseys instantly went into production, fantasy football players were hyperventilating as they scrambled their way through waivers to see if he was available. ‘Pitt Dion Lewis’ had landed in New England.

Dion’s Dream Season

Through just over six regular season games, Dion Lewis had piled up 622 yards from scrimmage, four total touchdowns and 36 catches.

He became a household name in New England. Dion Lewis tore up the NFL in his first ever opportunity to shine. Big play after big play, jump cut after jump cut, juke after juke, and spin after spin. Dion Lewis arguably became the ‘X-Factor’ of the Patriots offense through six games.

Defenses had no answer for him. A player his size usually excels outside of the numbers. Dion did exactly that. What made Dion so special and different was his ability to create space as a runner inside of the tackles.  Dion continued to surprise everyone around him, especially opposing defensive coordinators.

Nightmare Ending

As the Patriots approached the halfway point in the season, Dion Lewis entered the seventh game of his ‘rebirth’. The Washington Redskins were next up. Throughout the game, like every other team, Washington had no answer for Dion Lewis.

In the third quarter, Dion Lewis snagged a screen pass and shifted his way up the field. In an instant, a non-contact injury to his knee sent him leaping to the turf in order to avoid putting weight back on his leg.

Dion knew, Patriot fans knew, and as the broadcast showed, Matt Patricia knew. Dion Lewis’ dream season was over. The image of tears streaming down Dion’s face while getting an emotional pep-talk from coach Patricia… That will never leave the minds of Patriots fans. Dion had worked so hard for his opportunity. Multiple teams, fought through a gruesome injury, all to lose it again. Dion had gone through so much, and was forced to go through it all once more.

Dion Lewis watched the rest of the season from the sidelines with a torn ACL.

The Comeback?

Dion Lewis spent the entire rest of the season and offseason in rehab, trying to get back on the field. Many at first believed that Lewis would make it back for Week 1 of the 2016 season. Sadly for Dion, he was forced to start the season on the PUP list, preventing him from seeing the field for the first six weeks.

While Week 7 was the likely scenario anyways, it was a setback during rehab that truly pushed the timetable back.  Dion, eligible to play in the seventh game, didn’t see the field until Week 10, more than halfway through the NFL season.

The Comeback.

While Dion Lewis was healthy enough, and did play in Week 10 for New England, being “healthy enough” falls short of the player that Dion was before injury. Regaining the quickness in and out of cuts that Dion possessed before his injury didn’t come back when he did.  Not until Week 14 vs the 49ers did Lewis start showing signs of his old self. In that game he totaled 104 yards.

The first time that season that Dion Lewis truly was ‘Pitt Dion Lewis’ occurred in the Patriots first playoff match up vs the Texans. Dion Lewis scored  three touchdowns.  One receiving, one rushing, and one on a kick return. Dion Lewis looked electric again.

The Opportunity of Every Kids Dreams 

Along came the Super Bowl: Patriots vs Falcons.  The comeback of the century that taught everyone how to bet on sports from Boston.

While Dion got to play all of regulation, he injured his hamstring on the final play of the fourth quarter. The injury wasn’t serious, but enough to sideline him for the entire first overtime quarter in Super Bowl history.

At the end of the day, the Patriots and Dion Lewis became Super Bowl champions. Not until long after the Super Bowl, during an NFL Network documentary where Bill Belichick revealed that the ‘Super Bowl clinching play’, a power toss, was designed specifically for Dion Lewis. Belichick said that only Dion had ever run that play before. With that said, the injury sidelined Lewis  for the entirety of overtime.  James White had to run that play, scoring the game-winning touchdown in overtime of the Super Bowl. That play was supposed to be Dion’s.

The end result was still just as glorious for Dion, with or without him being the one diving across the goal-line. Still, any player would be lying to say that they wouldn’t want that opportunity, another opportunity that was stripped away from Dion by injury. 

On to 2017

Dion Lewis is healthy now, and it is very easy to tell. He makes jump cuts reminiscent of 2015. He’s running with the electricity of his Pitt days. Breaking long run after long run, Dion Lewis has worked his way back into the hearts of the Patriot faithful. The opportunities remain.  If he stays in the injury-free zone, the sky’s the limit for Dion Lewis.
