Brady One of SI’s 2018 Most Fashionable Athletes (@shanna_mc)

Tom Brady: Fashion Icon?

We all known Tom Brady is at the top of his game when it comes to football, but he’s also at the top of the fashion game. The evolution of Brady’s look has come with his rise to fame and the influence of his supermodel wife. He went from an awkward-looking kid at the NFL Combine to one of Sports Illustrated’s 2018 Most Stylish Athletes. The almost 41-year-old always gives us a show on the field and off the field gives us outfit inspiration.

The 2018 Most Fashionable Athletes list is created by style experts and Sports Illustrated’s 2016 Most Fashionable Player Victor Cruz. They say of Brady, “Whether he’s flanked by his supermodel wife on the red carpet or stepping off a plane en route to a game, the 40-year-old quarterback has kept up his easygoing style during his 18 years in the NFL.”

While some athletes like to keep it casual for post-game press conferences and interviews, many players show their personalities with what they wear. New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. caught the top spot on this year’s most fashionable list. Kyrie Irving of the Boston Celtics also made the list for having an effortlessly cool sense of style.

Brady’s Style

Number 12 has evolved his style, and his hair, during his almost two decades in the league. He admits that often his wife Gisele Bundchen picks out his outfits, but he created some of his own looks as well. Remember that time he single-handedly brought back turtlenecks?! In the past Brady has been the face of Ugg Australia, Tag Heuer and keeps his sneaker game fresh with his deal with Under Armour.

His boldest fashion choices have come at the MET Gala and the Kentucky Derby. At these events he is able to take fashion to the next level and surprise people with his wardrobe choices.

Belichick: A Fashion Influencer

Brady does not just get fashion advice from his wife Gisele Bundchen. Bill Belichick also seems to influence Brady’s wardrobe. Belichick is not known for his impeccable sense of style, but fans always recognize his signature cut-off hoodie look. Brady is known to copy this fashion choice from time to time.

Not all of Brady’s outfits are home runs (or should I say touchdowns), but whether you love them or hate them you’re bound to have an opinion on his wardrobe choices.

How to Make the Most out of Patriots Training Camp

Is it too early to get excited for football season to start? No? Okay good, because training camp is right around the corner.

Patriots Announce First Public Training Camp

The New England Patriots recently announced the date of their first public training camp. Fans are already getting excited to see football at Gillette again. The first public practice will take place on Thursday, July 26. The team has not announced information about their stadium practices yet.

Making the Most of Training Camp

Training camp is a great opportunity to enjoy the summer weather and see some football. Usually if you want to see Brady & Co. play it is going to cost you, but training camp gives you a free alternative. Dates that are open to the public are on the Patriots’ website. If you are going to training camp for the first time this year, I have a few tips on how to make your experience the best possible.

The practice is held on the field beside the stadium with limited bleachers. You can try and snag a seat there, but sitting on the grass gives just as good of a view. Be sure to bring a blanket to sit on and lots of water to stay hydrated in the Foxborough heat.

If you are bringing your kids make sure to check out all the activities they have around the field and in the parking lot. Every year they add something new to entertain fans. Many players come up to rope separating the fans from the field to sign autographs after the game, so bring a sharpie if getting a signature is your goal. Be sure to grab a roster from the Gillette workers to keep track of the new guys.

Make a day of it. Patriots Place is home to many restaurants, shops, and bakeries, making it a great place to walk around for the day. While you’re there head over to The Patriots Hall of Fame to take a picture with the Lombardi Trophies and try on a Super Bowl ring.

Views From Training Camp

To show just how close you can get to the action here are two photos I took at last year’s training camp:

I started going to training camp since I was young, and it has always been a fantastic time. It’s a great way to get excited for the upcoming season. Younger fans sit in awe as they are able to see their sports heroes only a few yards away. It is a great alternative if you cannot make it to a game this season.

Belichick Takes Players Back in Time During OTAs

Two Days off and an Unexpected OTA

Bill Belichick and the Patriots have a few quotes they live by: “The Patriot Way,” “Do Your job” and, of course, “No Days Off”. I attended the Super Bowl LI rally in Boston and when the team gathered outside Government Center, Belichick, the team, and the fans had “NO DAYS OFF” echoing throughout downtown. I always found this funny given we had all taken the day off to be there.

This week Belichick awarded the players with a rare “two days off”, canceling the final two days of voluntary OTAs. Bill also decided to give the team a history lesson on Tuesday in place of workouts, complete with a blast from the past, old-school football environment. Oh yes, we mean even leather helmets and black-and white-tape.

Going Old School

Many players could tell right away the day was different from most. One player told Mike Reiss, “It was a lot of fun. We walked in and you could tell something different was going on than the normal practice day.”

Belichick is always in his element when history is involved. He loves football history and while he is often a man of few words, he will go on for days when it comes to matters of the subject. “The thing I’ve learned about Coach Belichick is that he loves history, he loves military, and any time he can incorporate teaching us about that, he loves it”, another player added.

In addition to the leather helmets and black-and-white videos, the players received lunches inspired by what football players used to eat. The bagged lunch reportedly contained hot dogs and hamburgers rather than the foods players eat now. The team was fresh off a field trip to Fenway Park, which they had taken the day before, making it a week to remember.

The History of Belichick

Belichick developed a love for the history of the football at a very young age. The game has been a facet of his life for many years. It is no surprise he takes his childhood experiences and love of this history and applies it to the way he conducts his team. Belichick’s father, Steve Belichick, was an assistant coach at the United States Naval Academy, and Bill was able to learn a lot from him. Bill has often mentioned that his father was an important mentor to him in his football career and would study the game with him often.

Between heading to Fenway on Monday, and the history lesson on Tuesday, the team certainly had an interesting last week of OTAs. The team practices next at training camp later this summer.

Edelman Speaks Out After Suspension News

Julian Edelman weighed in after the news broke yesterday that he faces a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance- enhancing substance policy. The suspension is under appeal but if it does not get overturned Edelman will be missing the first four regular season games.

The Statement

Number 11 took to Instagram (@edelman11) to apologize to the Kraft family, the coaches, his teammates and the fans. He posted this message on his Instagram story:

2018 Season

He notes that no matter what happens, he will be ready to go for the season, whether that be game one or game five. He told fans that he looks forward to pursing another championship run with the New England Patriots, but cannot speak too much on the matter of the suspension at this time.

The name of the prohibited substance allegedly used has not been released.

LeBron James Compares Warriors to Patriots

LeBron James is no stranger to excellent teams and knows one when he sees one. After Game 3 of the 2018 NBA Finals, James mentioned the Warriors and the Patriots in the same breath, discussing both teams’ mistake-free play.

The Cavaliers are heading into Game 4, one loss away from a sweep. The Cavs know they can’t make any mistakes against the Warriors if a crazy comeback were to happen again. The Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers have been to the Finals four years in a row, and the Warriors have won two of the last three. With superstars like Kevin Durant and Steph Curry, no one is surprised that they have made it back to the Finals year after year. People have compared the Warriors to many past NBA teams, but James took to football to make a comparison. LeBron noted that playing the Warriors is like playing the Patriots, because you cannot make mistakes against them.

LBJ Press Conference

Number 23 makes a good point. During the Belichick/Brady Era, we’ve seen teams make mistakes against the Patriots that cost them the game. The Malcolm Butler interception, anyone?

In true NBA Twitter fashion, the New England Patriots’ Twitter account responded with the eyes emoji. James mentioned he is taking a break from social media, so don’t expect to see any social media friendships develop between LBJ and the Patriots.

2018 NBA Finals

This Cavs/Warriors series could have been a lot closer if it were not for certain errors by Cleveland. All J.R. Smith had to do was know the score and we’d probably be looking at a 3-1 series. And we all know 3-1 leads are hard to keep (Hi, Cleveland Indians and Golden State Warriors). LeBron was clearly, and understandably, frustrated and knows his team cannot continue to make mistakes, especially against a team like Golden State that isn’t, “…going to beat themselves.”

LeBron and Boston

With news flying around that James is set to meet with the Celtics, just the mention of another New England team has fans speculating even more. It is a long shot that we will ever see LBJ in a Celtics uniform, many think Boston is on his mind more than fans originally thought.

Not every Boston fan has expressed excitement over this rumor and many do not want to see “The King” in green and white. We sent out a Twitter Poll to find out what fans are thinking and many voted against LeBron coming to Beantown. Boston fans may never agree on what moves they want the Celtics to make when it comes to LeBron, or anyone for that matter. I’m sure they will agree with 23 when it comes to the greatness of the Patriots.

Edelman Facing Four-Game Suspension

The Patriots may have to start another season without one of Tom Brady’s go-to guys. According to league sources, Julian Edelman is facing a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance enhancing substance policy. Edelman has taken hundreds of drug tests in the past, and this is his first issue with the results.

If the suspension stands, Edelman will miss the first four weeks of the regular season. This means he will not take part in the Patriots’ season opener at Gillette against the Houston Texans, two away games against the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Detroit Lions, and a home game against the Miami Dolphins.

Edelman’s Impact

There is no doubt that Edelman is a difference maker for the Patriots offense, and the numbers show that his presence on the field will be missed. Brady’s touchdown to interception ratio is 5.9 with Edelman on the field, and 4.7 without him. Brady’s quarterback rating also takes a slight hit without Number 11 present, dropping from 79 to 65.

The results of the appeal are forthcoming, and there is no information about what drug caused Edelman to fail the test. It is rare to get a suspension like this overturned, but that does not mean it is impossible. Richard Sherman was successful in his appeal against a four-game suspension in 2012. If Edelman does not overturn the suspension, he is also looking at losing almost $500 thousand in addition to to the hit to his reputation that will come with the charges.

Edelman suffered a season ending injury during the 2017 preseason game against the Detroit Lions. MRI’s confirmed he had torn his right knee and had to sit out during the entirety of the season. Edelman has since recovered from the injury and participated in OTAs and minicamp with the team.

Looking Back: Boston Sports Pre-LBJ Finals Run

LeBron James is making his eighth NBA Finals appearance in a row. Even though sites like sport.netbet.co.uk favor the Warriors to win, everyone is looking back on what life was like the last time number 23 wasn’t in the biggest series of the year. There are third graders out there who do not know a time when LeBron James wasn’t in the NBA Finals. Kids going into kindergarten next year have never experienced a Finals series other than Cavaliers vs. Warriors. The last time LeBron wasn’t playing in June, Drake hadn’t dropped an album yet, Peyton Manning was an Indianapolis Colt, and Instagram had yet to be invented. Safe to say things were a bit different, but what was life like in the Boston sports world? Let’s take a look back at what was going on with the Celtics, Patriots, Red Sox and Bruins.

THE 2010 CELTICS

Nate Robinson was the small, yet mighty, Celtics star playing alongside The Big 3, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen.  Oh, the memories. The Celtics finished the season just short of winning it all. The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Celtics in seven games to become back-to-back NBA Finals Champions. Jason Tatum was 12 years old and Kyrie Irving was only in high school. The Celtics played this season in the newly named “TD Garden”, changed from “TD Banknorth Garden”.

THE 2010 PATRIOTS

The Patriots lost to the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card Round 33-14 on January 10, 2010. Tom Brady had *only* three rings, and was celebrating one year of marriage with Gisele Bundchen. Matt Light, Tully Banta-Cain and Brandon Meriweather were still on the team. Tom Brady was named Comeback Player of the Year. (Remember that knee injury that shook all of New England?) The Pats drafted Patrick Chung and Julian Edelman. I would say that turned out alright.

Many players, like Edelman and Brady, are still with the Patriots, and have been on the team for their entire professional careers. Chung is one player from that season who moved around before eventually returning to New England. Brain Hoyer was with the team for the 2009-2010 season as Brady’s backup and, while he is with the team today, his time in between was not all spent in New England. Hoyer moved around the league a bit before rejoining the Patriots as QB2 last season as a familiar face from the franchise’s past.

THE 2010 RED SOX

Terry Francona was the manager and Jacoby Ellsbury didn’t leave the Sox for the rival New York Yankees yet. You could hear “YOUKKKKK” echo at Fenway Park, as Kevin Youkilis was still a fan favorite. Current Red Sox player Andrew Benintendi was only 15-years-old watching games at home, rather than playing in the outfield. The Sox finished third in the AL East and failed to advance to the postseason for the first time since 2006.

THE 2010 BRUINS

The Bruins failed to defend their division and conference titles from the ’08-’09 season, but only had to wait one more year to hang that championship banner. Tim Thomas was in the net and Tuukka Rask was making his mark as the backup. Brad Marchand played his first NHL game this season. Eighteen-year-old Tyler Seguin was about to get drafted second overall by the Boston Bruins. The team finished with a record of 39-30-13.

Much has changed since 2010, but somehow two of the greatest athletes ever, LeBron James and Tom Brady, are still at the top of their game. Many fans are tired of seeing the same players dominate year after year, while others marvel at the improbability that such greatness can be upheld for all these years. Someday James will retire and give other teams a shot at competing for the title. For now it’s LeBron in the Finals: Part 8.

Predictions Are In: Patriots Odds to Win SBLIII

LESS THAN 100 DAYS TO KICKOFF

The countdown to the NFL season is officially on. We are now less than 100 days from the season opener. The 2018 season will kick off in Philadelphia with the SBLII Champions taking on the Atlanta Falcons. With the draft behind us and training camp just around the corner, predictions surrounding next season are flooding in.

The Patriots and their fans are no strangers to being favorites to win the Super Bowl, and this year is no different. Since the minute Super Bowl LII ended, before anyone even had a chance to sweep up the green and white confetti, predictions for next season began. Experts and fans love discussing who they think will hoist the Lombardi Trophy in 2019. No surprise here: the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles were two teams in the conversation almost every time. As the season gets closer, players get traded, and OTA reports come out, fans get a better feel for who they could see winning it all. It’s been a few months since early predictions were made, but the latest SBLIII odds are still weighing in the Patriots favor.

According to ESPN’s Football Power Index the Patriots, Steelers and Eagles are the top three favorites next season.

IGNORING THE NOISE

The offseason has been anything but quiet for Bill Belichick and company with drama circulating players, coaches and team chemistry. Uncertainties like Rob Gronkowski flirting with the idea of retiring, and Brady not officially stating that he will return have Patriots fans buzzing. New England fans tend to “Ignore the noise” as Belichick would say, but it always helps to know, despite the drama, their team still sits atop the NFL.
