Boston Celtics’ Rookie Robert Williams Still Not Cleared for 5-On-5 Action

Robert Williams has been battling knee tendonitis since the end of his college tenure with Texas A&M. The big man managed to play in only six minutes of Summer League before colliding with a 76er, and missed the rest of the action after reaggravating the injury.

With Training Camp Around the Corner, Williams Looks to Get Back on Track Quick

Training camp is just a few weeks away, but Williams has been working hard to make a comeback as efficiently as possible.

“Still taking it day by day,” Williams said. “There’s people that have a lot of time, a lot of money invested in you now, they don’t want to mess up what they got going. But I’m thankful for the trainers and the coaches, just taking it day by day.”

He understands the situation he is in and just wants to get back to healthy playing shape as soon as possible. Williams has spoken highly of the Celtics organization and their patience in dealing with his injury. He also see’s this down time as an opportunity to learn the X’s and O’s of the offense and all of the other technical aspects of being an NBA player.

“Just strengthening places I need to strengthen,” Williams said. “Obviously my knee, obviously knowing what’s going on out there on the court, knowing the calls before (Brad Stevens) throws in me a 5-on-5 game. He’s been teaching me actually the past couple days, just hammering in the calls, all the play names, all the big names for things, so it’s just been a great perspective, a great opportunity.”

Williams Expected to Be ‘Full Go’ by Training Camp

After a rough start to his career with the post Draft issues, Williams already looks like he is maturing and beginning to take a more level-headed approach moving forward.

Brad Stevens expects a fully healthy roster by the start of training camp, so chances are Williams will be cleared for 5-on-5 in the near future. Hopefully the big man can stay healthy this season, as he will have his plate full proving that he deserves a spot on this already loaded roster.

They have had the opportunity to play at  Fenway Park in Boston in 2010 and then in 2016 at Gillette Stadium. This season it is at Notre Dame Stadium.

In anticipation of their next Winter Classic game in 2019, we look back at the other outdoor games the Bruins have participated in.

The first game was the 2010 NHL Winter Classic played on January 1, 2010, at Fenway Park in Boston. The game, which was the third Winter Classic played, matchup up the Boston Bruins against the Philadelphia Flyers. The Bruins won the game, 2–1 in overtime with a goal from Marco Sturm. The Bruins wore a dark yellow and brown uniform that included the “B” from their 1955–57 jerseys.

In the second installment of playing on New Years Day, the Bruins faced their long time rival Montreal Canadiens at Gillette Stadium. The game was not a memorable one for Boston as they were defeated, 5-1. They decided to go with an updated version of the 1924-25 jerseys, replacing the brown with black and using a felt logo with the bear and Boston Bruins font crest.

This game will feature the Chicago Blackhawks and the Boston Bruins at Notre Dame Stadium. This will be the fourth Winter Classic for the Blackhawks and the third for the Bruins.

The Bruins announced their logo for the game. The logo is a brown and gold block “B”. It is an updated version of the one they wore during the 1991-92 season for the NHL’s 75th Anniversary. They chose to use the B that is on the current jersey and from the photos that were sent out on their social media platforms, the jersey will most likely be the replica of the ones worn during the 1932-33 season. The Bruins will be in white for the first time in a Winter Classic. The jersey will be white with dark brown and gold stripes. As with the previous Winter Classic jersey for 2016, the team will most likely use these as their alternate for some games during the regular season.

Tickets for the outdoor game and the prices range from $85 to $505 dollars. Fans who were able to experience the previous games at Fenway and Gillette will notice that the event prices have gone up year after year.

Tom Brady Doesn’t Care What People Think

Tom Brady Silencing the Drama

The final episode of Tom V Time has told us one thing. Tom Brady doesn’t care what anybody says. He’s playing until he’s 45 and that’s it. Brady also confirmed that he hasn’t been having fun playing football and that every team has issues. However, the drama around the team according to him has been blown out of proportion. Also, when he doesn’t win a Super Bowl, he gets frustrated just like anyone would. The greatest quarterback of all time is frustrated with the nonsense rumors surrounding the team. He put away any doubt that he isn’t ready for this season and wants to play until he’s 45 years old.

Five More Years

Will he last until 45 playing in New England? My opinion is yes, as long as Robert Kraft keeps him here and keeps him satisfied with the people around him. It’s Tom Brady and everybody else. He is and always will be bigger than the whole team. He didn’t like how the situation with Garoppolo was going to happen. We’ve heard it a thousand times. Belichick wanted to keep both quarterbacks but the money wasn’t there to keep both. Brady is also promoting his TB12 brand. By playing until 45 he can get people to learn his product and train like him so they can feel younger, too.

Brady has felt different since Garoppolo was traded. However, his determination hasn’t changed about wanting to play. He really put all the drama to bed so the main focus can be football. With the season starting on Sunday, Brady’s timing of releasing this five minutes of talking about the nonsense was to put away any doubt. Brady will not stop playing at the end of his contract.

I must admit I was wrong. Kraft would do whatever he can to keep Brady so he retires a Patriot. Playing until 45 is going to be hard to do. But Brady thinks he can do it. I say go for it, but draft a backup just in case he takes a hit and he’s out. Brady will be Brady. He will do what’s best for him which is doing something nobody has done before. That is to play at a high level at the age of 45.

What Have We Learned from the Patriots’ Preseason?

The Pats are always expected to make it to the “Big Game”—and this year is no exception.

The Patriots’ training camp began on July 26. Everything we’ve learned since then, including the four summer matchups, has given us certain insights into what we can expect for the coming year. Here are a few of our observations and predictions.

Tom Brady remains the NFL’s living legend.

Brady is all good…

Even at the age of 41, the team’s MVP quarterback seems to be in good form, which is an absolute necessity if the Patriots want to maximize their chances of reaching the Super Bowl again this season. The Pats’ second preseason game was a rematch of last year’s championship face-off against the Philadelphia Eagles. Brady shepherded his team towards a definitive 37-20 win, and he looked great doing so. As Brady has gotten on in years, a primary concern has been the inevitable deterioration of his passing strength. But his preseason performances made it clear that he can still whip the pigskin like a rocket when he has to. Brady also had a decent performance in New England’s strange matchup against the Panthers.

… and so is the offensive line

For the third season in a row, Joe Thuney, Shaq Mason, and David Andrews will start on the interior. Trent Brown will hold the left tackle position that he dominated during training camp. After missing out on most days of camp, right tackle Marcus Cannon has finally returned to practice. Because the team has lost first-round pick Isaiah Wynn for the entire season due to a torn Achilles, tackle depth has become the only open issue. However, LaAdrian Waddle is a suitable substitute, in case Cannon is required to sit out a few games.

The Patriots’ top picks will fail to deliver

Ever since 2014 and Dominique Easley, New England has failed to receive the benefit of its bargain from its top-pick players, and it seems that this will once again be the case this season. Adding insult to injury (pun intended) to the loss of Wynn, first-rounder Sony Michel participated in only three padded practices in August, and second-round cornerback Duke Dawson is likely to start the season on the injured reserve list. Furthermore, at the time of writing, Cyrus Jones—the second-round pick in 2016—is expected to be cut imminently.

Who will return punts for the Pats?

Let’s face it, New England needs a punt returner. Danny Amendola left to join Miami’s squad. And, regardless of how good he is at returning kickoffs, Cordarelle Patterson has never fielded punts at the pro level. As such, no one from the current roster seems to stand out as the “go-to” punt returner.

Julian Edelman is one possibility, but remember that he’s not only been suspended for the first four games, but will also be returning in the fifth week as a 32-year-old player who has just had major knee surgery. The end result is that New England is forced to keep certain players solely for the purpose of having a punt returner—for example, cornerback Cyrus Jones and receiver Riley McCarron, who shared this duty over the summer.

The team’s 15-year UDFA streak will continue with J.C. Jackson

Rookie cornerback J.C. Jackson is the team’s only hope for adding an undrafted rookie to the roster for the 15th straight year. Jackson finished the preseason game against the Giants with two interceptions of deep passes from Kyle Lauletta, which earned him a congratulatory handshake from Coach Belichick. It’s fair to say that Jackson was the most productive playmaker in the secondary throughout the preseason.

The Pats will start the season employing “running-back-by-committee”

Because of both outside need and injuries, New England will begin the season with a slate of players to fill the running back position, and they might have to do so for the entire year. To compensate for their lack of depth in wide receivers, the Pats will use more two-back sets, but their top candidate to play all three downs (Sony Michel) is a rookie who just missed most of training camp.

Furthermore, Sony Michel and Rex Burkhead are in bad shape, and Brandon Bolden is mainly a special teams player. They can put James White to work, but not on every down. Mike Gillislee and Jeremy Hill could also possibly make it into the rotation.

Scouting Report and Interview w/ Revs Academy Prospect Nick Woodruff

Nick Woodruff grew up in Attleboro Massachusetts. He started off his soccer career just as any other kid would. He began playing club soccer around 5 or 6 years old for his local soccer team. After that, Nick played club soccer from age 10 to 13 before joining the Revs academy at 14. Nick made 17 appearances for the U14 team and was eventually named the captain before being called up to the U16s. There, he made 27 appearances and another 35 appearances as the captain. Later that year he would be voted player of the year by his fellow academy players. Between 2015 to 2017 Nick made 51 appearances with the U18 team before ultimately committing to Michigan State.

After redshirting his freshman year, Woodruff has played in all 4 of Michigans State’s games, going the distance in 3 while adding a 110 minute outing vs Tulsa. He takes his soccer career very seriously and expressed his desire to one day sign a professional contract with the MLS. He would be honored to don the Revs jersey and play in front of his friends, family, and New England supporters. Over the summer, Woodruff joined the first team for 4 weeks of training which he said was a great learning experience. There isn’t many things that Nick can’t do on the field. He strives in a variety of different categories, but he and I both agree that passing is his strongest attribute. When I asked him what he thought his weakest attribute was, he gave a very strong and encouraging answer.

“I have made some huge strides on 1v1 defending over the last year but that being said I think I just need to grow in every aspect of my game and strive to get better everyday. I want to keep pushing my limits and each training and game is a new challenge. You can always get better and im very hard on myself. I watch every little detail on film and try to learn.”

His natural position is at center back, but in his younger days he played CDM, which is what plays this year. At 6’2″ Nick is not a small guy. He is always in the box for corners and is a big target. The one goal he scored this year was off of a loose ball corner that found him at the back post. Nick likes to compare himself to Diego Godin, saying that he likes to play with “controlled aggression, patience, and calmness on the ball, & try to be the best leader I can be.”

Nick Woodruff’s Scouting Report

One thing to note is that Nick is 19 years old. His passing is amazing. But just how good is it? In the 4 games he has played thus far this year his accuracy hasn’t dropped below 90% in a game. He already has an assist, as well. When he was younger he was called into training centers but says the national team hasn’t called him lately.

“At one point that was a big goal of mine but now im focused here at MSU and I’m hoping to sign a professional contract and then would love to eventually play for the national team. But all in all im committed to the process and just look to take it one day at a time.”

Overall, Nick is a great athlete and has a bright future ahead of him. He’s trained with the academy, he trained with the first team, now it’s his chance to impress at the collegic level. So without further delay, here is my scouting report on Michigan State and former Revs academy Defender, Nick Woodruff.

How Phillips Becomes An Asset Even When He’s Not On The Field.

The 37 year old infielder becomes an asset in multiple ways after being called up on Sunday night.

As Announced Tuesday afternoon, Brandon Phillips will be the first Red Sox player to don the number 0. He has finally got his shot at the major leagues for the first time this season. He claimed the last spot on the 40 man roster. His last major league game was on September 30, 2017 as a member of the Los Angeles Angels. Against the Oakland Athletics, he went 1-4 with a strikeout. While tearing it up in AAA Pawtucket, what does he bring to the table?

His career numbers show it all. During his 15 year career, he collected 2,026 hits, 210 home runs, 949 runs batted in, with a career .275 batting average. With the hopes of a contract next year as well, pending on his performance he might just get one.

In Pawtucket, he sported a .302 batting average with 4 home runs, 19 runs batted in, with 1 stolen base and 45 hits.  During his 38 games with the club. He has been showing us all along that he still has the offensive pop in his bat, and the speed underneath his feet to help move this Red Sox offense along.

While having great experience from his major league career, he can share his words of wisdom to the younger core of infielders this team has. Rafael Devers, Ian Kinsler, Brock Holt, Eduardo Nunez, and even Dustin Pedroia can learn a thing or two from Brandon Phillips.

Devers can especially get some inside knowledge of his throwing hiccups. While learning how to overcome these difficulties at such a young age. Pedroia can learn about dealing with consistent injuries. As we all know, Phillips had dealt with several injuries throughout his career as well. He is still playing at a high level at age 37.

His Versatility.

He has played at almost any position in the infield. He knows what each position demands, physically and mentally. His presence has made a nightmare scenario for most teams even worse. It will be interesting to note if he is used as a rest guy for now. As a 162 game season requires the need for a rest day here and there. The toll is heavy.

He comes up the same day Devers is taken off the dl. How will Alex Cora manage this? He said that he is very excited to have a veteran guy like him around. It will be fun to watch moving forward.

While he may be in action as soon as the first game against the Atlanta Braves Tuesday night, it remains to be seen how he will preform in his comeback. As one could only speculate the emotions tied to his first performance back to where he hit his stardom, and became a household name.

It’s Time for the Red Sox to Do Something with Nathan Eovaldi

Nathan Eovaldi started off strong for the Red Sox once he got here. He threw shutouts in each of his first two starts in Boston against the Twins and Yankees. He was looking like a great addition to the rotation. Skip ahead to September, and it’s not looking that way anymore. He hasn’t really had a good start since. His ERA has raised almost a full run in six starts ever since the shutout against New York. He’s not going deep into games, and he’s giving up lots of hits. With Eovaldi not looking like a starter anymore, it’s time to give him another role.

It’s time to move Nathan Eovaldi to the bullpen. With him not being able to go deep into games, he’d be perfect for a bullpen role. He would be the perfect guy to come in late in a game to get outs. He doesn’t need to start a game off and go deep when you can just have him go a few innings. His pitch arsenal is a good one for a long relief guy too. He throws 99 on his fastball with a really good splitter.

This could start out in September, he could get a pretty good amount of innings from it. But the real task would be in October, when it matters most. He could come out of the bullpen in say, the sixth inning. He could get three to six or seven outs and hand the ball off to Matt Barnes, Ryan Brasier or Craig Kimbrel. Or maybe he can come in and be a righty specialist against some big hitters. Whatever works. Whatever it is, you’re only adding another piece to the bullpen and you can never have enough arms over there.

Now I’m not saying Eovaldi would be some amazing untouchable reliever, but there is no questioning he and the team can benefit from a move like this. He would be a good piece added to a weak bullpen that can really only make it better.
