The Cavaliers Playing Dirty

The Cavaliers are playing hardball. In my opinion, they are playing dirty. In trade talks between the Cavs and Celtics, Boston was reportedly forthcoming with all medical information on Isaiah Thomas. The two teams agreed to a trade.  The Celtics would send the Brooklyn Nets first-round pick next season along with Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder and Ante Zizic to Cleveland in exchange for Kyrie Irving. The two teams forged the agreement based on the understanding of the health of Thomas’ hip.

During Game One of the 2017 NBA Eastern Conference Finals at TD Garden on May 17, 2017 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Faulty Memory?

A couple days after the trade, news leaked that the Cavaliers had concerns with Isaiah Thomas’ hip. Reports said they might ask for more compensation in the trade. They already had the information when they agreed upon the above deal, which, come on, is quite a nice haul.

This is where I believe the Cavaliers are playing dirty, using the media to their advantage. They knew the condition of Thomas’ hip when they made the deal. They decided to go through with the agreement and then leak this information to the media a few days later to put pressure on the Celtics. The Celtics fan base was stoked at bringing Kyrie Irving on board. What would happen if the trade didn’t go through? Cleveland knew they would have Danny Ainge in a bind. Hence my opinion that they planned to squeeze as much out of the Celtics as they could.

In the end, the Celtics should not cave. They can’t let the Cavaliers bully them into adding more to a trade that was already incredibly fair. If adding a second-round pick will do it, that’s okay. Reports of Cleveland wanting Jaylen Brown or Jayson Tatum added to the deal belong in the circular file.

Red Sox Have a Rough Weekend

The Red Sox entered the series with the Baltimore Orioles sitting on a 4.5 game division lead on Friday.  But the starting pitchers took a beating all weekend, barely getting an out. The schedule won’t get any easier, with the Blue Jays Monday through Wednesday, then off to New York for a four-game series beginning Thursday.

Mauled on the mound

Friday night Rick Porcello pitched only 4.2 innings, gaving up nine hits, four runs, and four strikeouts in the 16-3 loss. Saturday, Eduardo Rodriguez pitched, showing no improvement as they fell behind early, again. Eduardo Rodriguez pitched a five-run second inning, with 40 pitches. They lost 7-0. Sunday, Doug Fister had a slightly better outing,  but they still earned an ‘L’ 2-1. Fister pitched a total of seven innings, gave up five hits, two runs, and seven strikeouts.

Listen Sox fans — The pitching isn’t the only problem.  What about the hitting?  Hanley Ramirez stands zero for his last 14 at-bats with 9Ks, according to Boston Sports Info on Twitter.  Since July 4, Mookie Betts had 184 at bats, three home-runs, 26 RBI’s, and 32 strikeouts, according to Boston Sports Info.

The young guys have stepped up, which is good.   But what about the rumblings of an September collapse? It has happened before.  My answer for right now is – no. This team has too much talent to screw themselves out of the division.

Chris Sale had a tough start against Cleveland but he’ll bounce back. We still have to see if David Price can pitch without pain. Nunez has been a great call-up so far along with Rafael Devers. Hopefully injuries won’t factor into the final stretch of the season which begins now.

Should Starters Play in Preseason Games?

Friday night in Detroit the New England Patriots faced off against the Lions, the third preseason game for the Patriots. The starters took the field in the first quarter and completely burned the Detroit defense. But the excitement of watching the points pile up ended abruptly in the worst possible way.

Julian Edelman.  Down on the field.  Not springing up and running into the huddle.  Out came the injury cart.  And down dropped the hearts, if not hopes, of Patriot Nation.  On the following day, the worst fears revealed on an MRI.  A torn ACL, ending the 2017 regular season for one of the Pats most reliable and revered players — Julian Edelman.

Unnecessary Roughness?

Should the starters even play in a game that doesn’t count?  In my opinion, no.  Why expose any starter to injury when it means nothing in the standings? Either cover those players in bubble wrap or have them play a series, maybe two, then get them out of there.

The loss of Julian on offense hurts.  No doubt about that.  While the Pats still have Cooks, Hogan, Amendola, Gronk, and Allen, Edelman is Brady’s go-to guy. Without that amazing catch in Super Bowl LI, who knows what would have happened.  Julian is something special.   He has earned his spot in the organization and his place as one of the best receivers in the NFL.

Julian started talking about his recovery right after the game, even though most feared the ACL diagnosis.  But If anyone knows how to make adjustments to put the team in the best position possible to win football games, it’s Bill Belichick.

Belichick has a conference call today at 4 and most likely won’t comment on his injury as he only talks about players on the field. Pats fans look at it this way, Gronk was out last year and they still won the Super Bowl. This year Edelman is out. They still will win the AFC East, and have their place in the AFC Championship game atleast. Most importantly will be playing in the Super Bowl once again. So don’t say the season is over because Edelman is out you still have Tom Brady, other targets on offense, and a pretty good defense.

Recap of the Patriots’ First Preseason Win in Detroit

Tonight’s game was a bittersweet game for the Patriots as they earned their first victory of the preseason against the Detroit Lions. Players showed evident improvement this week as they continue to prepare for the regular season.

A fast-paced start from the Patriots’ starting offense was quickly brought to a halt, at the sound of a whistle for an injury timeout. Julian Edelman went down in the opening minutes of the first quarter with an apparent knee injury and was shortly carted off into the locker room.

Ian Rapoport and mutliple sources have reported after the game’s conclusion that Edelman has suffered a torn ACL, and will undergo an MRI in the days to come.

With Edelman’s season likely over prematurely, fellow wide receivers Chris Hogan and Danny Amendola are expected to step up. Whoever takes over the role left vacant by Julian Edelman will likely run more complicated routes in the middle of the field, rather than simple fly routes like Brandin Cooks.

On a more optimistic note, on the other side of the field, the Patriots’ defensive starters showed marked improvement in this game compared to their last two matchups. Stephon Gilmore had a great performance early in the game, while only batting down a pass and recording a tackle he showed success in covering his assignment. The starting defense as a whole made key stops in order to shut out the Lions starters in the first quarter.

The backup defense appeared better this week, but the secondary squad allowed a comeback in the second half against the Lions starters. The influx of points let up by the backup squad was expected by Coach Belichick, but he saw it as a challenge for them.

Overall, the Patriots are showing the growth and development needed to live up to their high expectations this season.

Every AFC South’s Sleeper Pick Of 2017

@thefrizz87 and I have put together lists that go over every single NFL team’s sleeper pick for the 2017 fantasy football season. We split it up by division, and have put together a great solid list. Today the AFC South is our focus, and it is a good division. Plenty of talented players play in the AFC South such as Marcus Mariota, Andrew Luck, etc. The AFC South is a fun division to watch because you never know who could come out with the division title. With that being said here is our list of the AFC South Team’s sleeper pick for the 2017 season.

Can Fister be Part of World Series Glory?

Doug Fister threw a complete, one-hit game against the Indians as the Red Sox beat the 2016 AL champions. To say he has come in for a lot of criticism since his move to Fenway is an understatement.

Its also true to say that Fister has been excellent and awful from start to start. His recent stellar performance followed a nightmare against the Indians when he gave up five runs over 4.1 innings.

Filling In

Fister fills in for the injured David Price, taking the fifth starter slot behind Sale, Pomeranz, Porcello and Rodriguez. Fister remains an important part of the push for the post season with Price sidelined.

Fister is currently 3-6 with an ERA of 4.78. Porcello occupies the same bracket, although last year’s Cy Young winner has shown signs of improvement of late. The front office has a lot of faith in Fister, even if fans don’t. He will be around for the playoffs.

The Red Sox should make the playoffs if Sale and Co. continue to perform, and the offense provides run support. Getting to the play offs is one thing, winning the post season is another. Can the pitching staff as a whole get it done in the play offs?

Post Season Pitching

The Royals and the Indians proved how a different way of pitching can succeed in the post season. Francona showed in 2016 that the traditional divisions between starters and relievers get blurred. Starters, like Kluber, and relievers like Miller, had to get used to a different regime during October.

That regime was designed to ensure pitchers could pitch at their best in Game Seven of the World Series showdown. The Royals had a clear plan in 2015. Get a lead by the seventh and then call for the lights-out bullpen.

It’s not clear whether Farrell has a clear plan but he needs one and the right personnel to make it work. As we stand, it’s the management of bullpen that is shaky not the starters.

If Price returns, pitches well and the rest of the rotation is healthy, expect Fister to join the bullpen. Fister could yet prove to be the unexpected treasure for the Red Sox.

The Future of the Red Sox Catching Position – Christian Vasquez

Christian Vasquez burst onto the Boston Baseball scene back in 2014, known for his work behind the plate, including a dazzling arm that runners soon appreciated. Never known for the bat as much as his fielding, one of his more memorable moments was a bomb off of Dellin Betances (NYY RHP) to give the Sox the lead at Fenway last year.  But he tapered off, especially with the emergence of Sandy Leon during the 2016 campaign.

Obviously, Colo, as some call him, is one for heroics, finishing off a wild game against the Cleveland Indians two weeks ago in the 2nd, with a majestic walk-off, three-run big fly over the monster. That moment encapsulated the 2017 Vasquez contribution for the Sox.  His year has Red Sox Nation fired up about what he can do in the future for the club.

Breaking Down The Stats

Batting

In 2017, Vasquez has 67 hits in 234 at bats (.286 AVG) with three homers and twenty-four RBI. His competition for the starting catcher spot, Sandy Leon, is 49-210 (.233 AVG) with six homers and thirty-two RBI. Numbers never lie, and the numbers show that Christian Vasquez is a superior hitter to Sandy Leon.

Fielding

It’s hard to argue about fielding as the most important part of a catchers play. A good fielding catcher who can also perform as a top-tier hitter is very rare.

When it comes to fielding stats,  Vasquez is straight up better than Leon. Vasquez has 16 runners that he has caught stealing, and 37% of runners have been caught. On the flip, Leon has caught only 13 runners stealing and only 33% of runners trying to advance on him. Leon has four fewer passed balls.  But passed balls are not a huge concern for Vasquez.

Not by the Numbers

Coming through in the clutch

As noted, Christian Vasquez came up with a huge walk-off home run against the Cleveland Indians. As a fan who catches almost every game, it seems Vasquez  always comes through with clutch or timely hits. It’s great to see a catcher with defensive skills who can also handle the bat and handle pressure.

Age

Vasquez is 27 years old and Leon only 28.  Behind the plate and in the box Vasquez appears  more athletic than Leon. Also for their respected careers, Vasquez has only half as much service time in the Bigs (three years), as Leon (six years).

The Future?

The reason why we see a platoon between Vasquez and Leon?  Chris Sale and Rick Porcello like pitching to Leon more than Vasquez. The younger guys in the rotation (E-Rod and Pomeranz) like throwing to Vasquez.

In 2018, it would be beneficial to the Red Sox to have Christian Vasquez as their everyday catcher.

Lowell’s Take on McGregor-Mayweather

A little off the grid here for the readers of Boston Sports Extra, but one of the biggest (and sure to be disappointing) sporting events is just hours away.

Conor McGregor versus Floyd Mayweather.  Mixed Martial Arts versus Boxing.  Ireland versus Badhumanistan.

Vegas odds have this publicity debacle going all Mayweather (+400 last I checked).  As a proud Irish-American, I am certainly pulling for “The Notorious” (not to mention I have never been a fan of domestic abusers…but I digress).

Lowell’s Irish Boxing Heritage

Anyway, today I am here to speak on behalf of the City of Lowell, Massachusetts.  Lowell is the birthplace and home to arguably the greatest “Irish” fighter in history,  Micky Ward.

Ward was a journeyman boxer who literally and figuratively punched his way to the top of the fight game in the 1990s and early 2000s.  Most remember Ward for his epic three-fight installment against Arturo “Thunder” Gatti, which included possibly the greatest round in history, right Jim Lampley?  Do yourself a favor, take a three-minute break from reading this and watch Round 9 .

Besides his battles against Gatti, Ward gained fame for two other things…

  1. His story, told on the big screen in the Oscar winning movie, The Fighter.  Mark Wahlberg made his own personal love of Ward and his history a Hollywood classic.
  2. His brother.  Self-proclaimed boxing legend Dickie Eklund.  Dickie is famous for “knocking down” Sugar Ray Leonard and, of course, his 1995 HBO Special, High on Crack Street.

Boxing Strategy, Run Amok

Point being, Lowell natives know a few things about insane Irish behavior, boxing, and on-screen drama…so we have a great appreciation and understanding of this Mayweather-McGregor media phenomenon that surely won’t live up to Round 9.  On the bright side, I polled some of Lowell’s ‘sophistcants’ and asked for their advice, suggestions and general commentary they could offer Mr. McGregor, in victory or defeat.

Here are some of my favorites…(again, not my words…just some unfiltered truth from the Mill City)

  • Dress up like a woman, Bugs Bunny style, cause then if you get hit, it violates Mayweather probation and he goes to jail.  Automatic win.
  • Have a couple of beers before the fight.  The Irish are always tougher after a few pops.
  • Imagine —  if you win, Conor, you get a rotary named after you.

  • Any chance the Lucky Charms guy is available for your entourage?
  • Irish guy in Vegas in August?  Don’t worry about odds, worry about the sun poisoning.
  • You have the opportunity to go back to Ireland with a world championship belt.  Most Irish guys only return on with the clap
  • Worst part of your trip is probably recognizing that EVERYONE is Vegas has that tiger chest tattoo
  • If you leave Las Vegas without your head in a vice or ice picks in your balls; consider yourself a winner (Casino reference, btw)
  • Best advice I can offer Conor, borrow $6mill from Dana White and bet on Mayweather
  • If you lose, you cant wear your ‘Fuck You’ suit anymore.  But you can borrow my ‘I got fucked up suit. (Hint, its really just a Larry Bird jersey and some wind pants)
  • If you are gonna bite his ear, at least finish your meal.  There are kids in Ireland that would kill for an ear.
  • If you are gonna lose, use the golden rule we all learned, kick your opponent.
  • We all know you are gonna lose.  The least you could do is try to fight like the Notre Dame mascot

Yeah anyway…so ‘man on the street’ in Lowell gathered a lot of….insight?  Candor?  Analysis?  I don’t know but this city is totally batshit.

Enjoy the fight, lads!

P.S.  Watch a real series of fights here

Every AFC North’s Fantasy Football Sleeper of 2017

The AFC North has some good talent year in and year out when it comes to fantasy football. Guys like Antonio Brown, Le’Veon Bell, A.J. Green, etc. all play in the AFC North. We also have three talented quarterbacks in that division as well. Ben Roethlisberger, Joe Flacco, and Andy Dalton are all QB1/QB2 options when it comes to fantasy football. The AFC North remains competitive year in and year out, because they have some star talent in that division.  Take a look at the list that @thefrizz87 and I put together for the sleeper pick on each team in the AFC North.

Kyrie and IT Trade Reactions

It’s been a wild 24 hours for the Celtics, after an off season that has already give Celtics fans a some cause to order that celebratory drink.  In fact, we just posted “Way-to0-early predictions” and you can’t help but ask if this team adds a few more Ws to our Celtics’ cause.

Chris and I found ourselves debating the merits of IT, the trade and their histories and decided to take it public so you can weigh in.  But, before we get started, let’s say a collective THANK YOU to Isaiah Thomas.  He brought it for the fans and his teammates every night.  The things he did off the court, like recruiting other players to our cause, had a significant impact on this team.  So, thank you Isaiah.  But, this is a business, so let’s talk…

Chris:  There are probably a lot of people with negative emotional reactions to this trade. However, this won’t be your typical “heart says no, head says yes” argument. In my opinion, this is an objectively bad trade from a value standpoint. Kyrie Irving and Isaiah Thomas are very similar players. They’re both great PGs. But Isaiah Thomas fit the system perfectly. Excellent pick and roll player, great at attacking the rim or pulling up and shooting from range. Excellent getting to the line, and one of the very best free throw shooters in the NBA. While Kyrie is also undeniably a great player, paying Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and the BKN ’18 pick to swap Thomas for a younger, less seamlessly fitting, version of himself seems like a massive overpay.

The trade by the numbers

First, play-type data from nbamath.com shows Thomas as the massively superior player both offensively and defensively last season. (And far superior in the pick and roll offensively, a bread-and-butter play for the Cs.) And this isn’t a volume stat. This isn’t a “well he ran more PnR so of course he accumulated more points in this type of situation. We’re talking points per possession, an efficiency stat that volume usually drags down. Thomas was a top 10 NBA player in Win Shares. He was top six in Win Shares Per 48. He scored 29 points per game as the sole focal point of the defense, attracting numerous double and triple teams and baseline and half-court traps. Thomas could get to the free throw line as well as anyone not named James Harden, and he was the second-best free throw shooter by percentage in
the NBA last season.

Brett: I’m not going to lie, I had an emotional reaction to this trade.  I think ITs commitment to the fan base is irreplaceable.  From all accounts, he was a great teammate, has a strong work ethic and is an all around good guy.  Kyrie got some of those qualities, but (and maybe it is because I don’t live in Cleveland) – I didn’t see as much of that.  That said, bringing a guy who can create his own shot and needs less help in post defense.  Sure, neither are great defensive players but Kyrie hasn’t had a coach like Stevens and can learn a new system, IT can’t grow.

I have a different perspective on the win shares.  Did he score, yes.  Did the team have anyone else who could come close to that, no.  Lebron (according to ESPN) averaged about 33 points again, Kyrie 26 and Love 17.  The top three Celtics players had Thomas at 23, Bradley with 17 and Horford at 15 for the 2016 season.  Boston needed to run plays, to provide Thomas room to find his shot.  Even competing for his shots in Cleveland with higher performing players around him, Kyrie was a top 20 ppg guy.

The algorithms of basketball

Chris:  Kyrie is also a great player. However, Kyrie Irving is a less efficient scorer. Sometimes this isn’t necessarily his fault, he excels at less efficient play types like isolation sets out of the high post. But the fact remains. This is especially concerning as Kyrie was playing with the greatest basketball player on earth and for a great three-point shooting team featuring the likes of Kevin Love, J.R. Smith and Channing Frye. Usually playing alongside other super-stars has statistical side effects. It may temper your counting stats, as you won’t see the ball as much or get as many shots. However, it usually increases efficiency. Celtics fans saw this effect first-hand when Pierce, Garnett, and Allen joined together. The all experienced drops in raw production of counting stats, but the best efficiency of their careers.

Kyrie is also not an improvement defensively. Again, turning to nbamath.com, one can see that Kyrie was a massive negative in several play-types. While Isaiah Thomas was also a negative defender, his negative impact on that side of the ball has been far overstated. Kyrie was actually far worse.

Brett: Ok, Chris, I hear you, and according to nbamath.com almost 20% of Isaiahs shots in the last two years came off screens or hand offs where Kyrie needed that help half as often.  In fact, Kyrie was able to play isolation more than twice as often as the It.  I supposed someone could argue thats that nature of these two teams systems.  but for Kyrie to spend 20% of his team in isolation with guys like LeBron and Love on the team is undeniable.    So, Isaiah needs his teammates to put extra miles on their legs to get him open where Kyrie can create his own shot.  Two sides of the same coin?  Maybe, but Kyrie’s value added in isolation is twice as strong as IT.

Celtics sacrifice?

Then there is the value side of what the Celtics gave up. The BKN pick was a prime asset. The 2018 draft class appears to be excellent. Zizic had very promising overseas numbers. Guys like Porzingis, Jokic, and Nurkic played comparably during their overseas careers. Zizic may not pan out like them, and isn’t a three-point shooting or offensively skilled unicorn like Porzingis, but he is a nice prospect. And Jae Crowder was included in the trade as well.

The thought of the Cavs lining up Isaiah Thomas, J.R. Smith, LeBron James, Jae Crowder at the four, and either Tristan Thompson or Kevin Love at the five looks terrifying. Crowder can defend the three’s and four’s of the modern NBA and hit spot-up and catch and shoot threes at a 40% rate.   Crowder represents one of the best value contracts in the league. All this for a player who will cost roughly $14M dollars more than Isaiah Thomas this season, and has an opt-out after two years. For all the whining about paying Isaiah Thomas max money, Thomas was still on the books for a bargain price this year, and Kyrie will need the exact same max to stick around just a year later.

This trade stands as a massive gamble and still possibly a massive overplay. The Celtics have to hope they can integrate Kyrie in their system.   They’ll need to transform him from an isolation player to a read-and-react offense, pick-and-roll heavy type system fit. They have to work on his shot selection. They have to hope Kyrie can duplicate the success Thomas had last year.

Even if you believe Kyrie has superior talent, which doesn’t necessarily showing up in the objective evidence, this won’t be a slam dunk because Isaiah was such a great system fit. The Celtics also have to hope Kyrie re-signs with the team in two years. If he walks, it’s a terrible trade.

The Celtics also have gambled on IT and LBJ leaving CLE in a year. If they both leave, and Kyrie works out, they’ll look like geniuses. If LBJ, IT, Love, TT, and Jae all excel together and decide to stick around, it may not matter how well Kyrie integrates into our system. So not only is this trade a risk in the short-term, but the best long-term asset in the trade went to CLE. And that is the BKN pick. In three years if Kyrie Irving is playing elsewhere and the Cavaliers have a young lottery stud to groom, this will be a terrible trade.

Consider the upside

There is potential for this trade to work. Kyrie could excel in the Celtics system like Isaiah did. Kyrie came from an ISO-centric system in college. Perhaps coming to a motion heavy, PnR-heavy, read-and-react offense will be a breath of fresh air. He’s a great ball handler, finisher and shooter. He could re-sign with the team. He is younger than Isaiah. (Though the two have very similar mileage in terms of NCAA+NBA combined minutes.  Thomas was a four-year college player, and didn’t jump up to an 82 game grind as early as Kyrie did.) The Celtics now have two years to make a max contract decision on their star PG instead of one. While Isaiah Thomas has been the far more durable player in their careers to date, and the hip is probably being over-stated as a concern, Kyrie is healthier right now and will be to start the season. The Celtics may have had to deal with a slight delay with Thomas. That’s probably not a big issue long term, but now they should start the season fully healthy as a team, which is always nice.
