How to choose the Best Basketball Shoes for Ankle Support

Most individuals, who is playing basketball puts on branded shoes. I guess, this is how they choose a pair to wear when they have a game. Some of them will buy the ones that their favorite basketball celebrities is endorsing. Indeed, it is quite expensive, but they do not mind spending because of the star’s popularity. For them, it is a pleasure to wear such brand and model, especially when it is a limited edition.

While other basketball players think about the gaming experience and performance. We all know that with this kind of sports, you are required to run, walk and jump a lot. Some of the moves may be fast and the others are moderate. The movements will depend on what type of player you are and your position in the game.

I supposed, you are aware that any form of injuries must not happen to keep you in the game. Though we cannot also avoid incidents, where you may experience ankle sprains as well as knee or leg injuries. Therefore, to keep the ball rolling, you have to choose the best basketball shoes for ankle support. You may be the best player in your team, but you can never tell what will be happening during the game.

You should know that when you got injured, you will lose the chance of finishing the game. You may end up in the clinic or hospital, depending on how serious the injury is. The sad thing here is that, there are injuries that requires you to rest for months before coming back to your favorite sport. This only shows that you have to be serious in choosing the right pair of shoe that can support your ankle.

Fitting

Since you move a lot, transition is important. If you are a type of individual, who likes putting on shoes with loose fitting, then this is not the right pair to use when playing basketball. You should know that when the fitting is loose, then your ankles have less support. Therefore, this will be a problem that can affect your performance and gaming experience. if possible, the fitting must be able to provide you a comfortable feeling as you are walking, running and jumping throughout the game. And when you jump, the risk of ankle injury is there.

Full High Top

I know that you like putting on low-cut or a three-quarter cut shoe because you find it easy to put on and off, right? However, with this one, you cannot get sufficient support that you need for your ankle. So, I suggest you to choose the ones with a full high top. This is also an ideal option, when you are a post player, where you are always along the basket area. Actually, it’s not just about the position, but if you are going to study the different moves and situations in a basketball game, then you can say that it is, indeed, a good choice to go for a full high top.

Design

When it comes to securing the fit of the shoe on your foot, consider the structure of the laces. Since you are aiming to support the ankles, you will then have to choose the ones with eyelets. Through this, you will be able to tie down the lace across the foot’s bridge.

Function

Always keep in mind that you are buying a pair of shoe for its optimal function and feature. And that this will help you improve and enhance your performance. Be reminded that the design or appearance is not supposed to be your greatest consideration. Again, if you prefer design rather than function, then it means that this is not for sports. But for collection and other purposes only.

Flexibility

Why are you buying a pair of shoe for ankle support, anyway? Take a look at the wing players as well as the guards. Do you know that they are prone to the risk, where they may roll their ankle, since you often drive too hard with the aim of reaching the basket to get a score? Sometimes, you suddenly change your action and direction because you have to defend. This may also cause your ankles to an unnatural posture.

Cushioning

Be very sure to choose a comfortable pair of shoes because you always move and run around. Do you know that a padding is necessary because when you land on your foot will prevent you from hurting your ankle? Make sure that the cushioning is also found on the heels and the forefoot as well. This will be very helpful because it will prevent you from hurting your ligaments and experiencing fractures. Now, if you do not like a padding, then you should know that there would be an impact on the arches and heels, too.

Ty Anderson talked to Marina Molnar about the Bruins off-season needs

Ty Anderson covers all things Boston Bruins for 98.5 The Sports Hub. Marina Molnar follows the Bruins for Barstool Sports. Earlier this week, Anderson was the first guess on Molnar’s podcast, Marina’s Morning Skate. They had an interesting conversation about the Bruins’ off-season goals.

The show started with both recapping how they still feel frustrated and disappointed with the Bruins Game 7 loss. Then Molnar transitioned to the contract negotiations of Brandon Carlo and Charlie McAvoy.

Anderson and Molnar both believe the Bruins and McAvoy should agree to a bridge deal. Molnar mentioned that since McAvoy has had injury problems in his young career, the Bruins do not want to give him a long term extension just yet.

“And if I were his camp, I would say, ‘do a bridge deal dude,’” Anderson said. “Because look at the Bruins cap structure, right. In the next two years, you have a lot of money opening up there between Backes, Krejci and Rask.” Anderson added that McAvoy could sign a 2-3 year deal at $5.5-6.5 Million a year. McAvoy could see a substantial salary increase if he reaches his potential.

Molnar also brought up how many Bruins, Bergeron, Marchand, and Pastrnak to name a few, took more team friendly contracts. “Do you really want to be that guy walking into that locker room, at 22, being the highest paid?” Molnar asked. “I wouldn’t.”

Anderson added the Bruins have been great at finding players to take less money to build a competitive team. “They’ve gotten guys to take less,” Anderson said. “And McAvoy is not going to be the exception there.”

The conversation then shifted to the other young, talented defenseman Brandon Carlo. Anderson asked how the Bruins would value a player like Carlo. “He’s not an offensive guy, he generates almost nothing offensively,” Anderson said. “But he’s a great skater. He’s a great shutdown guy. He’s been huge on their PK over the last three seasons. And I thought he was great in the playoffs for them too.” Anderson said he thinks he is worth just under $4 Million due to his lack of offensive skill.

Molnar was curious which player would sign first, McAvoy or Carlo. “Him and McAvoy are key cogs,” Molnar added. “They’re so young, they’re going to be key cogs for a long time.” Anderson and Molnar both think Carlo should make just less than $4 Million. However, Anderson and Molnar agreed he played well during his first postseason last spring.

Molnar pointed out that the Bruins have approximately $8.1 Million remaining in salary cap space. In order to sign both players, the Bruins need to shed some salary.

“I think the Backes contract is the one you have to move,” Anderson said. Anderson would move a first round pick with Backes to help get this core another banner. “I don’t want to trade a good player, like Torey Krug or David Krejci, to keep a bad player in David Backes.”

Molnar brought up that when McAvoy and Carlo sign, the Bruins will have nine defensemen. “I think a Johnny Moore or a Kevan Miller is probably more likely to be sent out with their low salaries.”

Anderson and Molnar also got into potential line combinations and bounced around with Twitter questions. This was an insightful look into the Bruins off-season and plans heading into training camp. If you want to learn about Ty Anderon’s journey to 98.5, I wrote a profile on him last spring.

This will be a two part article where I will dive into what this podcast might mean regarding 98.5 and Barstool’s relationship currently and going forward.

Why The Patriots Linebacker Unit Will Be Successful This Year

The Patriots linebackers will have a positive impact defensively, and will be crucial for the teams success. New, old, and returning Patriots have come together to form a truly scary unit.

Coaching

The two coaches with the most influence over this group is easily Jerod Mayo(Linebackers Coach) and Bill Belichick(Head Coach/Defensive Play-caller). Luckily for the unit, these two are the best men for the job.

Bill Belichick

No one can forget Belichick’s genius as a coach. His command for discipline, and the ability to get the most out of his players, is admired around the league. But what some may forget, is that he was a top defensive coordinator in the league during his Giants and Jets days. As a DC for nine years, he led FIVE top-five defenses, three top-10, and only one year of top-15. In that time span he also won TWO championships, both with the Giants. He was widely considered one of the best defensive coaches in the league, even with the help of talents such as Lawrence Taylor. With him as the defensive play-caller for the Pats next year, it means nothing will get lost in translation when talking to players or calling plays.

Jerod Mayo

Jerod Mayo wasn’t just a superb linebacker, but he is also a true leader. He was named captain FOUR times in a row during his playing career. His leadership and experience within the Pat’s system makes this the perfect situation for him to succeed as a coach. He also has connections with the current team, which give him a knowledge of what works best with the group and how to motivate them. His playing style, to me at least, is very similar to that of Collins. He also spent years playing beside Hightower. With all things considered, Mayo was literally the perfect option for the role.

Players

Dont’a Hightower

Dont’a Hightower has a vast knowledge of the game, granting him success no matter where he plays or what role he is in. In high school he played linebacker and end on the defensive side. As a senior DE, he had 168 tackles, five forced fumbles, and five interceptions. That campaign was good enough to win him the title 3A Mr. Football Lineman of the Year and The Tennesseans Defensive Most Valuable Player in 2007. At Alabama he broke out in his junior year, where he captained the best defense in the nation. He was a consensus first team all American and a finalist for many awards like the Lombardi Award (best player regardless of position), Chuck Bednarik Award (best defensive player), Butkus Award (best linebacker), and the Lott Trophy (an award on the person’s character).

This was enough to impress Belichick, who drafted him in the first round. Hightower has impressed in the regular season, and is even better in the playoffs. He is a great all around linebacker who can sneak into passing lanes, stop the run, or blitz. Last year was a comeback year for him after just recovering from a big injury. So this year I expect him back as a star linebacker.

Jamie Collins

The great Jamie Collins has returned, and for cheap too! Collins has a great IQ for the game. Since he was once a star high school QB, Collins knows how they think. He was amazing in college, collecting 314 tackles, 21 sacks, and three interceptions in his career. Collins also earned first team All Conference honors in his senior year. He is a greatly underrated pro, as in the three seasons he has started over 14 games he has had over 100 tackles, at least three sacks, and one to two interceptions. Just last year he posted the stat line of 104 tackles, four sacks, and one interception, which is a truly great year.

Like Hightower, Collins is also an all around solid linebacker. The only difference between the two is Collins is usually the center of blitzes thanks to his athleticism. Also remember, the Browns cut him because he was overpaid, not because he was bad. He was once spectacular in the Pats system, so why can’t he do it again?

Kyle Van Noy

Kyle Van Noy has been underrated for his entire career. In his junior year at BYU he was the leader of one of the best defenses in the nation, and was third-team All American because of it. As a senior he made second team, and also was named to the watch lists for almost all of the awards Hightower was a finalist for. His college career was good enough to be drafted by the Lions in the second round. Unfortunately, he never got the chance to succeed in the organization until his third year. That year he started all of the Lions games, before being traded to the Patriots with a seventh round pick for a sixth.

In his first full season for the Pats, he impressed with five and a half sacks and 73 tackles in 13 games. Last year he was even better, producing 92 tackles, three and a half sacks, and one interception while starting all 16 games. He was also crucial in last year’s playoffs run, averaging one sack and over five tackles a game on route to a championship.

Ja’Whaun Bentley

Ja’Whaun Bentley may not have showed us much, but what he has shown is extremely exciting. The young man had a good college career, starting all four years at Purdue. In his last year he had 97 tackles, 11.5 for a loss, and was an honorable mention for 2017 All Big Ten Conference Team. He was also named the defensive MVP of the Foster Farms bowl win over Arizona.

In the three games he played for the Patriots, he displayed the potential to be the best linebacker on the team. He had an interception and 14 tackles, and PFF even gave him a score of 80.7. That score isn’t only the best among linebackers on the team, but it puts him high on the list of the best linebackers in the whole league. I am excited to see how he plays this upcoming year, and I hope he gets the chance to develop and hone his skills.

Elandon Roberts

I’m not going to tell you that Elandon Roberts is a star, because he isn’t. But I will say that he is definitely important. He is the first man off the bench for the Patriots linebacking unit. While he isn’t flashy, he almost never makes mistakes, which is a trait that Belichick loves in his players. Roberts, like most of the Patriots linebackers, was a multi-sport athlete in high school due to his athleticism. At Morgan State college for his freshman year he had 107 tackles, two sacks, and an interception. The 107 tackles marks the second best single-season total in program history. This earned him a move to Houston, where in his senior year he racked up 142 tackles (fourth most in the nation). He fell to the sixth round, where the Patriots snagged him. His play rivals the starters, and will be an important piece this year if the Patriots go on a run in the playoffs or an injury occurs.

Experience, Connections, and Motivations

This group does not need the time to get to know each other and the system. Mayo, as previously stated, played for a Patriots defense which ran a near identical style. Four of the five main players in this unit have played for the Patriots in at least three seasons (counting the half of a season Van Noy played). They have also had at least a basic level of success. All of them also have a type of personality which meshes. Well, maybe besides Collins. The point is, this group doesn’t need time to settle in.

They also have a motivational tool which, has always fueled Patriots championship runs: the wish to prove people wrong. Hightower wants to get back to star form. Collins wants to prove he’s still got it. Van Noy wants to show that last year wasn’t a fluke. Bentley wants to prove that the flashes last season will lead to something, and that the injury hasn’t impacted his career. Roberts wants to show everyone he can compete at the same level as his teammates. This group is like a ticking time bomb, just waiting to burst out and take the league by surprise.

Verdict

Everything is there for the linebacking unit to be one of the top units in the league and lead the Patriots defense. Now we just need to hope that they recognize it themselves and play to their fullest potential. If preseason/training camp is any indication, they are well on their way.

Uprising Stage 4 Week 3 Preview: Washington Justice

New to Overwatch? Get caught up on everything Overwatch League by reading our introduction.

Friday, August 9th @ 7pm: Washington Justice

I may be starting to sound like a broken record here – but there’s no more room for error for the Boston Uprising. We knew going into Stage 4 the amount of pressure that was on the team. After getting broomed by Guanghzou, and losing a tight match on map 5 to Chengdu in Week 1, the outlook is even worse for the boys in blue. Let’s take a look what Overwatch League’s official statistician puts our chances of making the playoffs at:

A 4.4% likelihood of making the top 12 is… not good. I won’t get into how the dominoes would have to fall perfectly for Boston. It’s better to focus on what Boston has to do to keep their hopes alive – win. And by win, I mean win a lot. Any more losses will sink this team. That means they need to win out against Washington, LAV, NYXL, Atlanta, and Florida this stage. Not a big deal, right?

Fortunately, Boston starts out the beginning of (hopefully) a miracle run against the Washington Justice. If you look at the season standings, you’ll notice Washington is there – at the bottom. You may think that’s just what the Uprising need. But then take a look at the stage standings and you’ll notice Washington is there – at the top. Unfortunately for Boston, Washington has been on a tear since the 2-2-2 role lock came out. Can they stop the momentum that the Justice have this stage?

Washington Justice

What is behind the Justice’s resurgence? As far as I can tell watching them, two things – swagger and Corey. First, these guys are playing with house money. They were eliminated from season end playoffs weeks ago – what pressure do they have? That type of freedom in a high pressure environment like the Overwatch League goes a long ways. And you can see that when they play. They’re smiling, talking, and are loose. I mean look at these guys:

Second, they just happen to have some great players. Corey looks to be one of the best Widows in the league. Like Colourhex, the guy must have partied like it was 1999 when GOATs died at the advent of the role lock. His match against Vancouver last week was a highlight reel. Dude was popping heads like a game of wack-a-mole. Additionally, Sleepy seems to be an S-tier flex-support. His sleep darts always seem to find the right player at just the right time. There’s no doubt Boston will have to bring their A-game with them tonight.

Less we forget, last time we faced Washington it was the last week of Stage 2. Boston lost in a devastating reverse sweep, in my mind the worse loss of the season. The boys in blue have plenty of motivation to seek revenge. Additionally, they’ve had an entire bye week to focus on their opponent. With no one else to play this week, there’s no reason they shouldn’t come prepared to play.

Outlook

There’s no denying that the Overwatch League has become the wild west with the new meta. Chengdu just swept the NYXL right after the Justice swept the Titans. It’s a whole new world out there. But Boston hasn’t made their claim yet. While the Guangzhou match was a dumpster fire, there were flashes of brilliance in the Chengdu match. Boston has traditionally been a team that picks up steam as stages go on, and there’s no time like the present to light the fire. Unfortunately, there’s no more time to wait. They’ll need everyone to click together for at least three maps to secure a win.

I don’t think the season ends tonight. There’s just too much talent and potential. Colourhex can show up Corey. rCk can get on a run. Aimgod NEEDS TO PLAY (talking to you Huk). Blase can pop off on Doomfist. These are all things we’ve seen from Boston this season. They just need to happen all at once. It’s happened before and it just needs to happen again – for five more matches. That’s not asking for much – right?

How to choose Bike frame size and standover height

Bicycle frame size is a parameter that affects the length and height of the frame, i.e. its overall size. As the size of the frame increases or decreases, the upper, lower, and seat tube changes proportionally.

According to this website, by choosing the right standover height of a bike, you will be able to ride it comfortably every day without back/knee pain. When you buy a bicycle for sports or competition, choosing the right frame size is crucial.

There are 3 types of signs: ” (inches), conventional units (XS, S, M, L, XL), and centimeters (cm). The size range of a particular bicycle model is usually either even or odd.

Choosing mountain, city, and hybrid bike sizes

Below is the most popular size chart suitable for choosing most bicycles. Size matches are based on extensive sales experience, as well as being compared with many size charts of bicycle manufacturers.

Frame size (inches) – Your height (inches) – Frame size (cm) – Frame size (c.u)

13″-14.5″                     57.08-61.02 33-36                    XS (XSmall)

15″-16″                        62.2-67.71 38-40                     S (Small)

17″-18″                        66.14-71.65 43-47                     M (Meduim)

19″-20″                        70.07-74.8 48-52                     L (Large)

21″-22″                        74-78.74 55-58                     XL (XLarge)

23″-24″                        78.74-82.67 59-62                     XXL (Maximum)

  • Mountain bikes. When choosing hardtails, you can safely use this chart. There are rare exceptions such as Gary Fisher’s models that are longer in the base than most other bikes. Keep this in mind if you’re going to ride more than do sports. Dual frame suspensions are often only available in 2-3 sizes.
  • City bikes (comfortable models). If you’re in transition height, such as 70″ or 65″, note the presence of a suspension seatpost. It does not allow the saddle to be fully lowered into the frame, as it can be done on all mountain bikes. Therefore, with the height of 70″ it is better to take a bike with an 18″ frame than with 20″, and with the height of 65″ you will feel more comfortable on a 16″ frame than 18″.
  • Cruisers. Keep it simple when deciding on a standover height of a cruiser – these models have only 1 or 2 of them. Cruisers are usually designed for an average woman (61-70″) and a man (67-75″). If you have any doubts, ask a salesman.
  • Hybrids. Here it’s the same thing as with comfortable city bikes (shock-absorbing seat pins).

Choosing city and road bikes sizes (including Giant Compact Road™)

When choosing a road bike, I suggest you use the chart taken from the original catalog of bicycles Giant 2011 – 2012. All road and city bikes are available with Compact Road geometry.

Frame size – Cyclist’s height – Frame size (Giant Compact Road) – Frame length (seat/top)

19.29-20.07 61.8-64.17 XS 16.53 / 20.47

20.07-21.26 64.17-66.9 S 17.32 / 21.06

21.65-22.44 66.9-70 M 19.68 / 21.85

22.44-23.22 70-72.04 M/L 21.06 / 22.44

22.83-23.62 72.04-74.8 L 21.85 / 23.03

24-24.8 74.8-77.95 XL 23.03 / 24.01

Choosing folding bike sizes (Author, Giant, Shulz, Strida, etc.)

Most folding bikes are available in one size designed for the average person height from 61” to 73”.

Bike model – Optimal height

Author Simplex – 59.05-76.77

Shulz Easy – 59.05-72.83

Shulz Goa-3 – 61.02-72.83

Giant Expressway 1 и 2 – 61.02-72.83

Giant Halfway – 63-70.87

Giant Subway – 63-70.86

Strida LT, 5.2, SX, SD – 60.23-75.98

Choosing children’s bike sizes

All children’s bicycles are divided according to age and height. There is now a great deal of confusion on the Internet between bike sizes and children’s age. Therefore, I have taken this issue seriously and came up with a detailed size chart.

Child’s age (y/o) – Height (inches) – Wheel diameter (inches)

      1 – 3         29.52 to 37.4       < 12″

      3 – 4         33.46 to 39.37         12″

      4 – 6         39.37 to 47.24         16″

      6 – 9         45.27 to 53.14         20″

      9 – 13                 51.18 to 61.02         24″

The height and size of bicycle wheels were not just made up out of nowhere. In preparing this chart, the classifications of kids bike manufacturers themselves have been studied, as well as height charts for kids from 1 to 15 y/o. If your child grows slower or faster than the average, you can buy a smaller or larger bicycle, respectively. There is nothing wrong with this.

Choosing BMX bike sizes

A standover height for these stunt bikes is the length of the upper frame tube (top tube, TT). Choosing BMX is very individual and subjective. Someone likes to ride on short frames, someone prefers long. To determine how convenient it will be exactly for you, it is best to take a ride on friends’ or acquaintances’ bike. In the case of Giant’s BMX, the situation is like this: cheaper models are equipped with frames with a smaller standover height (on the prospect of that teenagers are basically buying inexpensive models). In other cases, I suggest using the chart (the accuracy of the information is not guaranteed!).

Your height Frame size

55.12-59.05 19.5″

59.05-66.92 20.0″

66.93-70.86 20.5″

70.86-74.8 21.0″

General recommendations and FAQ

What else do you need to consider when choosing from two suitable size options?

  • Assumed style of riding. For active and extreme riding it is better to choose a smaller bike – a bigger reserve of centimeters above the frame will give you confidence, and the bicycle will be more vivid. For a quiet ride through the city and parks, you can opt for the perfect fit.
  • Body build. If you have a slim or average shape, choose a large bike size. If you quite a large person, it is better to take a smaller size – it will be easier to sit, get off, and ride.
  • Useful adjustments. You can always change your position by adjusting the mtb saddle height and handlebar tilt (not available on all models). On mountain bikes, the stem is most often non-adjustable – a safety standard used on bikes designed for active riding. In this case, a longer / shorter / higher / lower stem can be purchased, which is an absolutely normal experience.

FAQ

Question: I’m 5’7″. Which bike size should I take, 16″ or 18″?

Answer: Choose according to your physique and intended style of riding. In most cases, it is better to take 18″.

Question: What if I have short arms or legs?

Answer: Take a smaller size, as the bike will be slightly lower and shorter. If you have short hands, you need to buy the shortest possible stem for your bike. If your legs are short, then lower the saddle at a minimum.

Question: What to do if I have long arms or legs?

Answer: Go for a bigger size. If you have long arms, get a long handlebar stem. If it’s your legs – raise your seat higher.

Question: Why do some bikes have a large range of sizes (from XS to XL), while others have only 2 or 3 sizes?

Answer: A wide size range is usually available for sports bikes, e.g. mountain and road bikes. For a cyclist, it’s important to choose a suitable standover height. But urban bikes usually have 1-3 variants of frame size, designed for a typical person height. Usually, it goes like this: if your height is up to 65″, then it’s “S”; from 65″ to 70.8″ – M; over 71″ – L.

In 2018, The Celtics were a few minutes away from riding their surging young core past the Cleveland Cavaliers into a finals matchup with The Golden State Warriors. LeBron James would pull another triple-double to rob us of this potential matchup. Looking to 2020, we could very well see both the Celtics and Warriors square off with similar teams to what they had in 2018.

Why They’ll meet in The Finals

The Warriors possess a distinct advantage in that they experienced the least turnover in the Western Conference. They have essentially the same roster they had when they won two championships. The Celtics have an advantage in that they have a revamped version of their 2018 squad, featuring All-Star Kemba Walker. Both teams also have top-5 coaches in Brad Stevens and Steve Kerr. The free agency that severely altered the league has put both these teams into a great position to make a run in the playoffs.

What’s changed for the Celtics?

The Warriors had won the NBA title in 2018 after Boston failed to get past Cleveland to meet them there. However, now they are in a position to make it happen. For starters, both Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum have grown. With Tatum in his third year and Brown in his fourth, both the young wings have the experience and minutes to flourish as a duo. Kemba Walker replaces Terry Rozier from the 2018 squad, bringing All-Star scoring and important leadership ability. The Celtics will have a healthy Gordon Hayward off the bench, who was lost six minutes into the 2017-18 season. Boston also brings a solid draft class of young talent who fit coach Brad Stevens’ team-oriented system better than Marcus Morris or Kyrie Irving.

Why we want to see it

Many people did not want to see Golden state and Cleveland face off for another consecutive year. The super-team Warriors versus a young, upstart Celtics team would’ve provided a more entertaining series, even if Boston didn’t prevail. This year, Golden State returns a slightly different but deeper team then 2018. They have good odds of getting to the Finals again, with only the Clippers as true competition. The Celtics will have to best the likes of Philly, Milwaukee, and Toronto, but now look more like that same group of upstarts, except younger and more hungry. Boston was expected to cruise to the Finals last year, until they fell apart in the second round. They have a chip on their shoulder, and fully expect to stand opposite of GSW when the NBA Finals roll around in 2020.

Boston Bruins newest prospect Pavel Shen: What you need to know

As Paul of Online-Casinos.co.uk predicted, on Monday the Bruins announced that the team has come to terms with 2018 seventh round pick forward Pavel Schen.

Where’s he been?

After being drafted in the seventh round in June of 2018, Shen decided to stay in Russia and continue playing Russian junior hockey (MHL). He totaled 12 goals and 15 assists in 34 games, while managing a plus 11 rating in juniors. Shen played in Russia’s second highest league (VHL) during the 2018-2019 season, totaling two assists in 13 games. Shen also played 49 games in the KHL. In those 49 games he had two goals and one assist. You can see a full history of Shen’s Junior and professional career here

Offensive upside

Schen’s offensive game has carried him so far in his career. Before being drafted by the Bruins, Shen was named to the MHL All Star team in the 2016-2017 season. During that season he lead the Mamonty Yugry in total points, with 45 in only 46 games played. In those 46 games, Schen scored 16 goals and had a team high 29 assists. Of the players who played only 46 games that year, Schen had the most goals, assists, and points. A plus minus of 16 also put him fourth in that category. Those numbers didn’t exactly translate for Schen as he moved leagues however. Much like Bruins first round pick John Beecher’s situation, once Pavel moved up leagues, he became buried by talent.

Where does he go from here?

Given the forward depth in Providence, Shen will likely see the bottom side of the top nine at best. Shen is a natural center that can move over to the wing spot if needed. Shen can join the top six, but he’ll have to show improvement in his overall game. If he can prove to make plays on a regular basis, Shen could find himself being plugged into the top six because of injuries or call ups. If he can play with the top six, he’ll really be able to show off his talent in the AHL.

Perhaps a move to the right wing would work for Schen. The stacked center depth might prove to difficult to crack for any future Bruins prospect. With a move to the wing, it’ll be easier for Schen to play with the more talented prospects, seeing as how the Bruins are so shallow on the wings.

Whatever the case may be, don’t count Schen out just because he was a seventh round pick. He has some very raw talent, but talent that could be enough to get him to the NHL level some day. Only time will tell.

Meet Your Playoff-Bound Uprising Academy

In case you missed it, the Overwatch League has a development league akin to baseball’s Triple-A and basketball’s G-League. It’s called “Overwatch Contenders“, and the Boston Uprising’s team, the Uprising Academy, are having one of their best season’s to date.

New to Overwatch? Get caught up on everything Overwatch League by reading our introduction.

With their latest win against the Gladiators Legion, the Uprising Academy cemented their spot in the NA East Overwatch Contenders playoffs. Sitting at 5-2, the Uprising Academy have drastically improved the last time we saw them in Contenders. Back in Season 1 of Contenders, UA had finished 1-6, forcing them to fight for their spot in Contenders Trials – a season long promotion-relegation league where amateur teams can win a spot over the worst Contenders teams.

What I’ve come to realize recently is how little people actually watch Contenders as a whole. So I am here today to catch you up with the Uprising Academy, and help you become the best bandwagon fan you can be.

The Roster

Contenders has a different rule-set than the main league, and sometimes teams will bring in substitutes that aren’t on the main roster. Occasionally teams call in a ringer to fill in for a match, like UA had to do in their most recent game. For the sake of this introduction we will focus on the main roster for now.

Season Recap

After finishing with an impressive 7-0 record in Contenders Trials, UA looked to start their redemption arc. Their toughest games came first, having to play Atlanta Academy and the newly-branded GRUNTo Esports (formerly Chicken Contendies) .

The Slow Start

For their first match, UA came out blazing hot against GRUNTo, taking the first map 2-0 on Ilios. But starting out strong doesn’t mean much without the ability to close out matches. The Uprising Academy would go on to lose the next three maps in a row to open the season with a loss.

After the loss against GRUNTo, the Uprising Academy began looking for a new off-support player. Hunter “Dino” Traupe’s contract had expired after Week 1, and the organization decided not to renew it.

Six days later UA signed their current support Scaler, just in time for the match against Atlanta Academy. Normally as teams pick up a new player, we tend to see some regression in a team’s play. But sometimes we see new faces bring vast changes to a team, even leading to some surprise wins. So maybe the signing of Scaler would bring success against Atlanta Academy – one of the top teams in the division?

Sadly that was not the case. The skid would continue further into the next match against Atlanta. Losing 0-4, Uprising Academy started their second season going just 1-7 in maps, and 0-2 in matches. After such a rough loss, it would be easy to fall into the trap of thinking this season would turn out like the last. But that would be incredibly naive of you. This is a Boston team don’t forget, they are extremely hard to keep down.

The Spectacular Run

The week following the brutal Atlanta loss, the Uprising Academy came back in a big way. UA put on a show, beating the Skyfoxes 3-1, only losing the last map in the series. They continued to prove themselves as the following week they beat Phase 2 3-1. In fact, Uprising Academy would go on to win four games in a row with the same score, with two more wins against Bermuda and Square One. Despite early success, Uprising Academy’s coach Raymond “Kolsti” Tea was not content to keep winning 3-1.

Oh jeez coach relax.

Last match of the season came against the fierce Gladiator Legion. Last season they placed 2nd, right behind the dominant Fusion University. In a barn-burner of a match, the Uprising Academy come through to win 2-1 and secure the 3rd overall seed for the playoffs.

Playoff Time

For their first game in the bracket, Uprising Academy have a re-match against the Gladiator Legion. GOATs was still the meta the last time these two played, but going into the playoffs role-lock will be enforced. Expect a coming-out party for Boston and their talented DPS duo, because they’ve shown flashes of brilliance in a meta where DPS was almost non existent.

Catch the game on Twitch August 12th at 10:30 est, and lets cheer on our minor league team!
