Tension Between Alex Guerrero and the Patriots

Alex Guerrero has been working with Tom Brady for a long time. Guerrero has his own personal office and travels with the team. In a story by the Boston Globe today, Alex Guerrero has had his privileges revoked recently, Players besides Brady have worked with Guerrero such has Chris Hogan, Rob Gronkowski, and Julian Edelman. All have had negative results.

Tom Brady Benefits from Alex Guerrero’s Treatment

It seems like the only player who has benefited from Alex is Tom Brady. At a press conference today Belichick was asked only one question about if he meets with Brady weekly. When Garoppolo was traded he offered up the information that he met with Garoppolo weekly. Belichick’s response was “I meet with all of the players all of the time”. He was then asked today about his relationship with Tom Brady. “Well, every year is different”. Very interesting responses from the person he’s spent 18 years with.

Colin Cowherd said once before that Brady and Belichick aren’t best friends. He doesn’t like Belichick. He respects him as a person and all of is loyalty is to Robert Kraft.

Belichick and Brady Won’t Comment on the Situation

Belichick declined to comment on a rift with Guerrero. He was asked in an interview with WEEI and said, “Yeah, I’m not really going to get into that”. Brady also wouldn’t comment on it either, saying, “I don’t have any comment on that. Other than to say Alex, it’s been well-documented, has been a huge part of what I do. I’m so fortunate to have him not only as a friend, but with everything that we’ve been able to do together”. Belichick was not asked about the Boston Globe story. All he was asked was his relationship with Brady. Also a bunch of players that aren’t really the main focus today.

Patriots-Steelers: Game of the Year

That game yesterday was just what the doctor ordered. It was the highest rated game on CBS for three years. The Patriots get the number one seed and clinch the easy AFC East once again. The Patriots never really have two bad games in a row but yesterday they really didn’t play all that great. Injuries showed for the defense, which attributed to Ben Roethlisberger’s success.

The Final Drive…

To the drive and play everyone is talking about. Tight end Jesse James caught a pass from Ben Roethlisberger and as he crossed the plane the ball came loose and hit the ground. Was it a touchdown? No. Was it an incomplete pass? That’s a no too. You can clearly see his knee touch the ground before the ball crossed the plane and he lost control of it. It should’ve been first and goal at the one yard line for Pittsburgh. Secondly though what is Pittsburgh doing throwing on that final play? All they had to do was spike it and kick a field goal.

Brady Is Always Clutch

At the end of the day Brady is going to be Brady. Those Brady to Gronk completions were great during the final drive of that game. The defense gave up that big catch and run and then with a little help from the refs the Steelers lost the game after not electing to go for a field goal. The defense once they get the players back the Patriots should be better. That wasn’t there best performance and you don’t win that game without Tom Brady.

Now the Patriots have two easy cupcake games before heading into the playoffs with home field throughout. Get ready for a shootout in the AFC Championship game when the Steelers come to Foxborough at a chance to go to the Super Bowl.

Way Too Early 2018 Patriots 3-Round Mock Draft

As the 2017 NFL regular season is coming to a close in a few weeks, analysts are beginning to look into each team’s future. The 2018 Draft is slowly approaching and now is the time to start to think about how college talent is going to be translated into the league next year. Some teams that were out of luck this season aim for renewal in 2018 as they hope whatever piece they bring in will be a game-changer. For others much like the Patriots the draft is for acquisitions that will be ready to go when their name is called. That could come in midseason of their rookie year, or the beginning of their third in the NFL. With the current state of the Patriots, there is no need for panic.

The Patriots are always silent when it comes to their plans for the future. We have seen two different front office approaches from the Patriots in the past. Back in 2012 they hit a home run by drafting both Dont’a Hightower and former Patriot Chandler Jones. Adversely last season they belted out their early picks as draft night approached for immediate talent like Brandin Cooks. The Patriots are not afraid to pass up on young talent in the draft, and through whatever algorithm they use they do not select many busts. Now five months away until the 2018 Draft, the Patriots currently have the following picks:

1st round pick (NE)

2nd round pick (NE)

2nd round pick (via San Francisco, acquired in the Garoppolo trade)

3rd round pick (NE)*

4th round pick (NE)*

6th round pick (NE)

7th round pick (NE)**

The Patriots will either have to give up their 3rd or 4th round pick to the Eagles due to a deal made for Eric Rowe back in 2016. This will be decided based on his snap percentage since 2016. Due to the playing time he has missed this season from injury, I can only see it feasible that the Patriots will have to give their 4th. The Seahawks own New England’s 5th round pick from a deal for Cassius Marsh in the offseason. Finally, the Pats might also owe their 7th round pick to the Bengals after acquiring Marquis Flowers from them back in August. However, it is unconfirmed if the pick was for 2018 or not.

The following mock draft will change a lot from now to April 26th due to draft order, team needs, free agency grades, etc. Some college prospects listed have not even declared for the 2018 draft yet.

1st Round: Ben Banogu, DE/OLB, TCU

If there’s one element that the Patriots need help with the most, it’s help with their pass rush. Their defensive line has not been the same since Rob Ninkovich retired in the offseason. Watching the likes of Josh McCown be able to dance around in the pocket and avoiding sacks is pretty frustrating for fans, and even more for defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. ESPN’s Todd McShay has Banogu as the Patriots’ first pick in his first mock draft for 2018. Ben Banogu can add depth behind Dont’a Hightower and is capable of moving down to help out Trey Flowers as well. This pick could be up in the air since 2017 pick Derek Rivers has not yet proven himself after suffering a torn ACL in the preseason. Banogu recorded 15.5 TFL and 8.5 sacks in 2017, which fell below the radar a bit. But underrated and versatile prospects are what Bill Belichick loves. He served in a 4-2-5 defense at TCU, which is similar to the Patriots’ scheme. This pick would be great to quickly address the team’s pass rushing problems.

2nd Round: Mason Rudolph, QB, OSU & Mike Hughes, CB, Central Florida

Even though we all wish he could, Tom Brady can’t play forever. With a presumably early 2nd round pick from the 49ers, the Patriots will have a whack at getting one of the many promising QBs that this draft class offers. Mason Rudolph is one that could be slept on in the first round, making him irresistible early in the second. In his four years at Oklahoma State Rudolph threw for 13,267 yards and 90 touchdowns with a QBR of 159.3. A strong-arm quarterback that operates under a spread system is something to raise eyebrows at if he were to become a Patriot. A few years under Tom Brady will give Rudolph the intangibles to lead the team in the future.

Mike Hughes is a solid corner that is projected to be taken in the 2nd or 3rd round. In 2017 he posted five interceptions, eleven passes blocked, a forced fumble, and forty four tackles. His return skills add another dimension into his game as well. His leadership at Central Florida helped bring the team to an undefeated season. Malcolm Butler could potentially walk after this season if contract negotiations don’t go well. Adding depth at corner will certainly help Stephon Gilmore, who is finally showing his talent on the Patriots.

3rd Round: Jaylen Samuels, FB, NC State

This is assuming that the Patriots get to keep their third rounder from the Eric Rowe trade.

Don’t be deterred by the fullback listing; Jaylen Samuels is probably one of the most versatile players in this draft class. Samuels plays tight end for NC State, but also lines up to take carries out of the backfield and gets splits outside. In 2017 he has 69 receptions for 551 yards and four touchdowns through the air. On the ground averages 5.4 yards per carry for 383 yards and 11 touchdowns. He can be a great back to have on third down for the Patriots because of his unpredictability. Coach Belichick has a history of taking versatile players in the draft, Julian Edelman being a prime example.

Patriots Travel to Pittsburgh

The Patriots travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers Sunday for the game of the season. Both teams are trying to get the number one seed in the playoffs. The Patriots couldn’t get anything going in Miami while the Steelers took care of business against the Ravens. Belichick wasn’t too happy with a reporter asking if the Patriots overlooked the Miami game on Monday shaking his head.

Tom Brady Has an Injury

Tom Brady is battling an Achilles injury which has kept him out of practice last week. Brady did practice yesterday and will be ready to go on Sunday. The Patriots don’t usually lose two in a row and tend to have a breakout game after playing a bad one. Brady loves the “in decline” talk that the loud mouths say on TV. He proves them wrong and shuts the haters up that say he doesn’t have it anymore.

Bill Belichick’s Thoughts on Pittsburgh

Belichick spoke to the media yesterday at his weekly press conference talking about the Steelers saying:

“Pittsburgh is having a great year, very talented team, playing very well right now. They’ve been playing well all year but especially over the last couple of months. They’ve put a lot of big wins together, played a lot of good football at the most critical times of the game when they needed to. It’s a well-balanced team, very explosive on offense, good on defense, good in the kicking game, have a lot of great players, well coached, tough, hard-nosed, physical team. We’ve had a long history of great competitive games with [them]. I’m sure it will be a great environment there Sunday afternoon.”

I really don’t see the Patriots losing this game. They have Gronk back this week which was a huge miss on Monday. The Patriots will be fine; they really don’t usually play well in Miami anyway. I don’t mean to make excuses, but the Patriots are the best at having a bad game one week to completely turning around the following week.

Top Five Boston Sports Moments of 2017

It’s December, which means 2018 is right around the corner. A lot of things happened this year in Boston sports from the Patriots winning the Super Bowl to Kyrie Irving being a Boston Celtic. Claude Julien is no longer the coach of the Bruins and the Red Sox are looking to add a power hitter after the Yankees just got Stanton. It’s been a year of up and downs the Red Sox fired John Farrell and hired Alex Cora who is coming off a World Series win with the Houston Astros. Here are my top five Boston sports moments of 2017:

5. CLAUDE JULIEN GETTING FIRED:

The same day the Patriots had their victory parade after winning the Super Bowl The Bruins fired Claude Julien. Don Sweeney spoke about firing Julien saying.

“I had come to a conclusion that in moving this group forward with an eye toward the plans that have been put in place, that I wasn’t willing to commit to a longer term basis with Claude”.

Claude didn’t really interact with the younger guys on the team. Bruce Cassidy took over and is playing the younger guys which is giving the Bruins a better shot at winning.

4. JOHN FARRELL GETTING FIRED:

John Farrell exits as Red Sox manager.

After the Boston Red Sox were eliminated from the playoffs Dave Dombrowski fired John Farrell. The reason it’s number four on this list is because it was a move that had to be made and long time coming. It’s a fact that back-to-back division wins isn’t good enough, and they needed a change. The Red Sox hired Alex Cora as the new manager going forward. In conclusion John Farrell spoke about being fired last week in an interview on MLB Network saying:

“Hey, every situation has a shelf life and a change was made. I respect the change that did take place.”

3. JIMMY GAROPPOLO GETS TRADED:

Jimmy Garoppolo got traded to the San Francisco 49ers. This came a shock to many Patriots fans as they thought he would be the successor to Tom Brady. As a result Tom Brady at age 40 seems to not be slowing down anytime soon and still playing at a high level. Jimmy Garoppolo is 2-0 as a starter for the 49ers and 4-0 lifetime as a starter. General Manager for the 49ers John Lynch spoke after the trade:

“I am extremely pleased this came together today and we all think it is a big win for our organization”.

Brian Hoyer was the old backup for the 49ers singed back with the Patriots.

2. KYRIE IRVING GETS TRADED TO THE CELTICS:

The NBA off-season was a win for the Boston Celtics. The Celtics traded for Kyrie Irving sending Isaiah Thomas to the Cleveland Cavaliers. When the trade happened it shocked a lot of fans around the Boston area and in Cleveland. It was obvious Irving wanted to get away from LeBron James and win on his own. The Celtics also singed Gordon Hayward. But as he looks to make it back for at least the playoffs, Irving sets the tone for the Celtics and is the leader of the team. The Celtics currently have one of the best records in the NBA.

1. THE PATRIOTS WIN SUPER BOWL LI:

Number one on this list is pretty obvious. Super Bowl LI was not only the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history, it was a landmark for Tom Brady. There is no question Brady is the greatest quarterback of all time. He and the Patriots never gave up in the game. They had the right leader leading the comeback. The best part of it a the Super Bowl win after Tom Brady’s suspension. The Patriots are on a clear path this year too as they’ll win the division game AFC Championship and go to the Super Bowl again.

2017 was a great year in Boston sports and it shows that Boston is the best sports city in the country. For 2018 it will be a fun exciting and roller coaster ride for the Boston Sports teams. How will the Red Sox respond to Stanton going to the Yankees? How will Alex Cora do as the manager? Will the Patriots win the Super Bowl? Are the Bruins going to make the playoffs? Will the Celtics make the NBA Finals? We’ll find out next year!

On to Pittsburgh

Wow, that game was awful. Another loss down in Miami and an ugly showing by the Patriots to fall one game behind the Steelers heading into next week’s match-up. Despite what the scoreboard said, this might have been the ugliest game the Patriots have played all season. Kenyan Drake ran wild and Jay Cutler was routinely hitting open receivers. Then you have the 0-11 on 3^rd downs. 0-11! This was the Patriots’ first game since a 24-10 loss to the Phoenix Cardinals in Week 5 of 1991 where they failed to convert on third down. That team was quarterbacked by the legendary Hugh Millen. Based on how the offense looked last night, I think Millen may have been on the field again.

Why This Might Not Be a Bad Thing

Hear me out; yes the Patriots looked terrible and fell behind Pittsburgh in the standings. If the Patriots win this coming week, they jump back ahead due to head-to-head tiebreaker, so they control their own destiny. I don’t think it’s a bad thing to drop a game late in the year. The Patriots were just humbled, shown they are not invincible by a very mediocre team. Moving forward, maybe they approach each game with more meaning. I’ve always thought since 2007 the Patriots would have been better off dropping that regular season game to the Giants. As it stands, the Patriots eight game winning streak came to an end; they know they are not indestructible. But again, they just won eight straight, this is a good team, don’t look into this loss too much.

Moving Forward

The Steelers better watch out. Coming off an embarrassing loss, the Patriots will likely be firing on all cylinders next week with home field on the line. The Patriots have typically played well coming off a loss during the Belichick-Brady era. I expect this coming week to be no different. The Patriots have won four straight matchups with the Steelers and eight of the last ten. During that four game streak the Patriots have averaged 34 points per game. Over those previous ten games, including the losses, they have averaged 30 points per game. They have historically had the Steelers number. One of the losses came with Matt Cassel at quarterback in 2008.

In addition to those factors, Rob Gronkowski will be back. At least part of the reason the Patriots offense was all out of sorts was the absence of Gronk. Gronk is so hard to cover that defenders have to hold him constantly to stay with him, and oftentimes are allowed to do so by the refs. With 849 yards and 7 touchdowns on the season, Gronkowski is a huge part of what the Patriots do on offense. Gronk has also played five games against the Steelers and averaged 99 yards per game while scoring eight times.

Another positive on the offensive side of the ball is Chris Hogan. Yes, he only had 1 catch for 1 yard this week, but the whole offense was out of sync. Hogan himself was just coming back after missing over a month. He was also limited in practice all week leading up to the game. With a full game back under his belt, I think Hogan will be up to speed and ready to contribute more.

The Steelers

The thing working in the Steelers favor is they have a home game. The Steelers have been a much better home team over the last couple years. Their offense is lethal at home, but only mediocre on the road. Roethlisberger has thrown 64 more yards per game at home than on the road so far this year, while tossing four more touchdowns in one less game. Last year he averaged 81 more yards per game at home while throwing 20 touchdowns there as opposed to only nine on the road. Taking this back to the beginning of the 2015 season, Ben Roethlisberger has played 18 home games and 21 road games. During that time he has averaged 64.5 more passing yards while playing at home. He has also thrown 50 touchdowns versus 19 interceptions at home, 24 touchdowns against 23 interceptions on the road. It is clear this offense is dangerous at home.

What to Expect

I think the Patriots offense will come out clicking. Brady will be firing on all cylinders while they effectively mix in runs with Dion Lewis and Rex Burkhead. I predict the Patriots will score on their first drive of the game and not look back. The Steelers will do some scoring of their own to stay within striking distance, with a late field goal bringing them within one possession.

Dwayne Allen Can Make up for Disappointing Season Against Dolphins

Dwayne Allen hasn’t had the most successful season with the Patriots to say the least.

The Patriots acquired Allen and a 2017 sixth round pick this past offseason from the Colts for 2017 fourth rounder. The 6th year tight end came to New England with 1451 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns under his belt. His highlight performance thus far came almost a year ago, where he recorded three touchdown catches in the first half against the Jets. That was the Dwayne Allen Coach Belichick wanted on his squad coming into this season. The Dwayne Allen that decimated the Jets’ defense in 2016 would be dangerous when lined up with Rob Gronkowski. Bill Belichick envisioned Allen as being a perfect backup to Gronk after Martellus Bennett left the team for Green Bay. With his catching and blocking abilities Allen was theoretically one of the more exciting additions to the team last offseason. Or at least fans thought.

Unexpected Disappointment

The average NFL season possesses a certain level of entropy. A team that is successful one season might not be the next. A prime example is just about every team from the AFC West this season. The same principle goes for individual players as well. Dwayne Allen was one of the centerpieces of the Colts’ offense last season. Dubbed “Pylon Allen” by BSE’s Jeff Jardine, he has been the opposite of that so far in New England. He expected a decline in numbers when he took a secondary role on the Patriots. However, this season has been disappointing, even in backup standards. Allen has caught a mere five passes on thirteen targets. An easy drop in the home opener against the Chiefs set the tone of his season. The 406 receiving yards he put up in 2016 are ten times the amount of what he has this season.

It has been tough skating for Dwayne Allen in New England, but he doesn’t seem the slightest bit defeated. With Gronk serving a one game suspension, he will likely get the start for the first time as Patriot Monday night. Allen hopes to have similar results as Gronk when he tore up the Dolphins’ defense in Foxborough two weeks ago.

A Story of Redemption

Dolphins’ defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh told reporters that it is his job on Monday night to get in Tom Brady’s head.

“My job is to piss him off and have him yelling at his offensive linemen for not blocking me, his coach and everybody on the sideline.”

With the Patriots’ offensive line riddled with injuries as of late, the Dolphins’ defensive game plan will be focused on pressure. The only way to slow down the Patriots is to send Brady to the ground early and often. They expect that with Gronkowski out this week the Patriots will focus on their run game and passing short. Dolphins’ scouts have seen Dwayne Allen’s stats this year and have ruled out him being a factor on offense.

But Coach Belichick likes to keep defenses thinking, and I can see him using Dwayne Allen without hesitation early into the game. Quick slants and cross routes down the middle of the field will be a reliable outlet for Brady to get the ball out of his hands. Dwayne Allen won’t let this opportunity to be a focal point of the offense go to waste when his name gets called.

Eric Lee Turning Heads

Background on Eric Lee

Patriots head Coach Bill Belichick has a talent for finding hidden talents. It appears this season he may have done it again.

Last month the Patriots claimed Eric Lee off waivers from the Buffalo Bills practice team. In New England Lee has already made a name for himself. In his second year in the NFL, Lee has bounced around a bit. Before the Patriots claimed him, Lee spent a season on the Houston Texans practice squad and began this season on the Buffalo Bills practice squad. So far in New England, he’s surpassed expectations and filled a void the Patriots badly needed to close.

Early Impact

Lee has only played two games with the Patriots and he’s made his presence felt. The defensive end made his debut with the Patriots two weeks ago against the Miami Dolphins. He recorded four tackles and a sack. Lee even got the attention of Tom Brady. He didn’t even know Lee before the game. Lee was an even bigger factor last week. In the Patriots win against the Buffalo Bills, he had four tackles, a sack, and a key interception. In the first quarter with the Bills driving, Lee picked off Tyrod Taylor at the goal line. This not only gave the Patriots momentum, but took away the opportunity for the Bills to get a key touchdown. Making plays like that are what will get Lee playing time. So far in New England he’s played like he has a chip on his shoulder.

Outlook for Remainder of Season

This season the Patriots have faced a lot of adversity at the defensive end position. The Patriots drafted Derek Rivers in the third round of the NFL draft in the spring, but he tore his ACL in August. The Pats then traded for Cassius Marsh from the Seattle Seahawks. He struggled in New England and the Patriots cut him after nine games. Lee has given the Patriots consistency when they’ve needed it the most. If he can continue this, he will soon become a household name in Foxborough.

Josh McDaniels Controls His Own Future

Another head coaching opportunity might be available for offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels this offseason. The New York Giants have reportedly reached out to McDaniels as a potential candidate for their vacant head coach position after firing Ben McAdoo earlier this week. NBC Sports’s Mike Giardi reports that when asked about his interest in the position in a conference call on Tuesday, McDaniels gave a reserved response:

“I’m just interested in the Dolphins right now. That’s where my focus is at and that’s where it’s going to stay.”

Josh McDaniels has not served as a head coach since 2010 with the Denver Broncos. However, he has been in the running for head coaching positions that have popped up in the past two offseasons. He fielded interest from the Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Chargers, and San Francisco 49ers for their head coach vacancies in the past two years. He shut down each offer, and expressed that he is more than content in New England.

McDaniels has built up a tremendous résumé with the New England Patriots. After his promotion to offensive coordinator in 2005 his work has been instrumental for the team. In 2007, his offense set records after scoring 67 touchdowns on offense. Though he left the Patriots from 2009-2011, he has been present for all five of the team’s Super Bowl wins. Though he is satisfied with his current position on the Patriots, he still longs to be a head coach again. In come the Giants.

An Offer of a Lifetime

The Giants are much different from teams that haven given McDaniels offers in the past. They are at a very interesting point currently after clearing out Ben McAdoo and GM Jerry Reese. This has been a fluke season for the Giants. Injuries to Odell Beckham Jr., upon many others, crippled the team. No one going into this season saw the Giants having a losing record with the intangibles that they have. Injuries and poor coaching from McAdoo destroyed all passion that players had this season. Eli Manning briefly sitting on the bench caused him to realize his mortality in the league. If he decides to leave New York this offseason this could be a very interesting change in the team. The Giants can bounce right back by taking one of the premier quarterbacks this class has to offer.

Josh McDaniels is perfect for this role. He has the potential to do amazing things for the Giants franchise. This is a perfect opportunity to get to head coach one of the marquee franchises in the league. That said, he also could have a head coach role in the future where he is right now.

An Heir to the Dynasty

Though it could be a few years the road from now, Josh McDaniels could potentially receive a promotion. McDaniels has a very good shot at being the successor to the head coaching job in New England once Bill Belichick calls it quits. In a recent take on McDaniels’s future from NESN’s Doug Kyed, he suggests that Josh and director of player personnel Nick Caserio could work together to fill the head coach vacancy. The Patriots are known to promote from within once a position becomes available, so it is very possible that he could take over after Belichick retires.

The current question about that, however, is if he would rather stay in New England or take a current vacancy in New York. The reason why Josh McDaniels has turned down job offers in the past two years may allude to him potentially wanting the head coach job in New England in the post-Belichick era. Only in his 40’s, he could possibly stay with the Patriots for a number of years until Belichick retires. Josh McDaniels’s history in New England could keep him with the team for the long-run, and Patriots fans would love to see him take the reins in years to come.

Monday Night Football

The Patriots travel to Miami to play the Dolphins on Monday night without Rob Gronkowski. He lost his appeal and will serve his one game suspension on Monday night. The Patriots however should beat the Dolphins without Gronk anyway. Far from elite quarterback Jay Cutler, who will be playing on Monday night, has never beaten the Patriots in his career. In the three times Cutler has played the Patriots his team was outscored by 34, 29, and 28 points. In two of the three times Cutler didn’t even finish the game.

With Gronk not playing Bill Belichick was asked if the offensive game plan will change during his weekly Wednesday press conference:

“Well, we’ll just do what we always do. Take the players that we have available and match them up against the great team that Miami has, their defense and how difficult they are to play against and block and move the ball. Try to come up with the best plan that we can to be competitive with them Monday night.”

Another good question from today was how Brady was playing at such a high level at the age of 40.

“Yeah, well, Tom works hard. I think Tom’s talked a lot about that and discussed his personal training methods and so forth. So, I mean, he’s probably a better person to comment on that than I am, but Tom works hard. He’s here every day and puts an awful lot into his preparation, both physically and mentally for the game. So, I think that has a lot to do with it.”

The Patriots Should Win Monday Night

The Patriots should be clear winners on Monday night. They are 10 point favorites and were 12 before Gronk lost his appeal. The defense is playing better and should be all over Cutler, who doesn’t want to play for the Dolphins anyway. The Patriots should walk away with a 34-17 win. Then it’s on to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers a week from Sunday.
